Newfound Missionary Baptist was the largest church in the area and was well known throughout the community for having good preaching, good singing, and delicious, southern style food. It seems as though everyone in the community knew each other or a family member. Sage was the kind of woman that loved attention and sought it in different ways. She worked with some of the most creative and innovative people at Newfound. Sage loved being a support system for the staff at Newfound, especially Daniel Morgan. Daniel was the creative mind behind the Yahweh Food Bank which fed more than 200 famil...

In response to the rapid growth of musical theatre as a global phenomenon, The Oxford Handbook of the Global Stage Musical presents new scholarly approaches to issues arising from these new international markets. The volume examines the stage musical from theoretical and empirical perspectives including concepts of globalization and consumer culture, performan...

Mikael Nilsson offers a detailed and groundbreaking analysis of how the United States Information Agency (USIA) conducted its wide-ranging propaganda campaign in Sweden during the Cold War, 1952–1969. The USIA placed propaganda in the Swedish press, radio, and television as well as schools and universities and established connections to labour leaders, government officials, and journalists. The book also details how the U.S. military financed research at Swedish universities. Nilsson shows how Swedish journalists, scientists, and government officials assisted the USIA in its propaganda efforts --- i.e., co-produced U.S. hegemony in Sweden. The book highlights both the width and the limits of USIA’s propaganda and also relates this theme to Swedish security policy and the secret military cooperation between Sweden and the United States.

A Romanian Rhapsody

Maestro Sergiu Comissiona’s biography reveals facts about his happy childhood in a Jewish petit bourgeois family in Bucharest – then, “the little Paris of Eastern Europe”, his adolescence under the Nazi specter, and his youth in repressive communist times behind the Iron Curtain. His life changes from the closed horizons of communist Romania to the broad ones of the Western world when he immigrates to Israel, later settling in England, then Sweden and, finally, the United States. His career path, from an ensemble violinist to an internationally-renowned conductor, is followed chronologically and analytically, based on his own accounts, extended research, and revealing testimonials. The Maestro’s rationale of having his biography written was, in his own words, “for the Westerners to understand my deep attachment to my Romanian roots, for the Romanians to know about my struggle for artistic affirmation in the Western world, and mostly for young conductors to realize that through passion, patience and persistence – and by not committing suicide after the first failure – the dedicated commitment to the profession bears fruit.”
