Begins with a macroscopic picture of the evolution of passenger transportation, showing that the introduction, growth, and decline of a particular mode follows a Gompertz-type curve. Following the noted historical trend showing a progressive transition from waterways to railways to roads to airways, it is argued that a new mode should be introduced to provide mobility into the 21st century: high speed ground transportation. Development of high speed rail and magnetic levitation (maglev) systems is then reviewed, focusing on systems that are operational or under development in Europe and Japan, and concluding with some thoughts on how these modes will evolve. The technology and potential applications of high speed ground transportation and a low/intermediate speed maglev system are described. Concludes with a discussion of the potential intra- and inter-city applications for high speed rail and maglev systems in Canada.
