I sommeren 1783 udsendes Paul Isert til tjeneste som læge ved de danske slaveforter på Guineakysten i Vestafrika, hvor han snart involveres i den blodige Sagbadrekrig, som i 1784 udkæmpes øst for Voltafloden. I krigslejren i Ada møder han Notsekvinden Adikie Asaleh, kaldet Tetele, en kommende seerpræst og politisk aktør.
