Cloud Foundry: The Definitive Guide

How can Cloud Foundry help you develop and deploy business-critical applications and tasks with velocity? This practical guide demonstrates how this open source, cloud-native application platform not only significantly reduces the develop-to-deploy cycle time, but also raises the value line for application operators by changing the way applications and supporting services are deployed and run. Learn how Cloud Foundry can help you improve your product velocity by handling many of essential tasks required to run applications in production. Author Duncan Winn shows DevOps and operations teams how to configure and run Cloud Foundry at scale. You’ll examine Cloud Foundry’s technical concepts...

Set Theory

This volume presents the proceedings from the Mid-Atlantic Mathematical Logic Seminar (MAMLS) conference held in honor of Andras Hajnal at the DIMACS Center, Rutgers University (New Brunswick, NJ). Articles include both surveys and high-level research papers written by internationally recognized experts in the field of set theory. Many of the current active areas of set theory are represented in this volume. It includes research papers on combinatorial set theory, set theoretictopology, descriptive set theory, and set theoretic algebra. There are valuable surveys on combinatorial set theory, fragments of the proper forcing axiom, and the reflection properties of stationary sets. The book also includes an exposition of the ergodic theory of lattices in higher rank semisimpleLie groups-essential reading for anyone who wishes to understand much of the recent work on countable Borel equivalence relations.

Reclaiming the Game

In Reclaiming the Game, William Bowen and Sarah Levin disentangle the admissions and academic experiences of recruited athletes, walk-on athletes, and other students. In a field overwhelmed by reliance on anecdotes, the factual findings are striking--and sobering. Anyone seriously concerned about higher education will find it hard to wish away the evidence that athletic recruitment is problematic even at those schools that do not offer athletic scholarships. Thanks to an expansion of the College and Beyond database that resulted in the highly influential studies The Shape of the River and The Game of Life, the authors are able to analyze in great detail the backgrounds, academic qualificatio...

Algorithmic and Geometric Topics Around Free Groups and Automorphisms

This volume presents the lecture notes from the authors’ three summer courses offered during the program “Automorphisms of Free Groups: Geometry, Topology, and Dynamics,” held at the Centre de Recerca Matemàtica (CRM) in Bellaterra, Spain. The first two chapters present the basic tools needed, from formal language theory (regular and context-free languages, automata, rewriting systems, transducers, etc) and emphasize their connections to group theory, mostly relating to free and virtually-free groups. The material covered is sufficient to present full proofs of many of the existing interesting characterizations of virtually-free groups. In turn, the last chapter comprehensively describes Bonahon’s construction of Thurston’s compactification of Teichmüller space in terms of geodesic currents on surfaces. It also includes several intriguing extensions of the notion of geodesic current to various other, more general settings.
