In the first of a two-volume study, the author presents an extremely detailed record of the organization, doctrine and equipment of U.S. Army infantry divisions during the latter part of World War II. After examining the state of the U.S. Army during the 1940-43 period, the author focuses on the 1943-45 period, and presents each of the division's sub-units-- from the divisional HQ to an infantry battalion, from the divisional artillery to its combat engineer element. For each, the author examines their organization (down to the lowest level possible), their training and tactical doctrine, and the equipment, vehicles and weapons they used. The information given for each division includes: divisional insignia illustrated; alongside the division's motto(s); full list of units assigned to the division; full list of units temporarily attached to the division, e.g. tank destroyer battalions, including dates of attachment; complete lists of staff and regimental commanders within the division, including dates served, assignment of division to higher formations (e.g. corps); and extremely detailed combat chronology recording the division's activities. This amounts to a virtual combat diary.

The author presents an extremely detailed record of the organization, doctrine, and equipment of the Armored Division of September 1943. He examines each unit of the division. A chapter is dedicated to the Tank Battalion, Armored Infantry Battalion, but also Maintenance and Medical Battalions. The author examines the organization and tactical doctrine of each unit and studies the doctrine of employment of the unit, as well as the duties of key personnel. Each sub-unit is presented by lists of personnel, weapons, vehicles, and equipment. The book includes 146 charts depicting the organization of all units. In each chapter, a special paragraph examines the modifications made in the field by armored division’s units, as found in unit reports, and histories, and veterans recollections. This is an essential reference for re-enactors, modellers, wargamers, researchers, and all those who require a detailed guide to the U.S. Armored Division during WWII.

The First Infantry Division and the U.S. Army Transformed

This fast-paced and compelling read closes a significant gap in the historiography of the late Cold War U.S. Army and is crucial for understanding the current situation in the Middle East. From the author's introduction: “My purpose is a narrative history of the 1st Infantry Division from 1970 through the Operation Desert Storm celebration held 4th of July 1991. This story is an account of the revolutionary changes in the late Cold War. The Army that overran Saddam Hussein’s Legions in four days was the product of important changes stimulated both by social changes and institutional reform. The 1st Infantry Division reflected benefits of those changes, despite its low priority for troops...
