First published in 1997. The International Institute for Asian Studies (lIAS) is pleased to introduce a new series 'Studies from the International Institute for Asian Studies'. This present volume, India and Beyond; Aspects of Literature Meaning, Ritual and Thought, contains more than 30 contributions from well-established scholars from different disciplinary backgrounds. These essays are in honour of one of the founding fathers of the lIAS, Frits Staal, Professor Emeritus of Philosophy and South Asian Languages, University of California at Berkeley. This volume is edited by Dick van der Meij, editor of the Indonesian-Netherlands Cooperation in Islamic Studies Programme at Leiden University.
International Cooperation Between Politics and Practice
This study looks at the way cooperation between both countries has been shaped by non-government actors. Questioning why President Soeharto's decision to end Dutch foreign aid in 1992 did not lead to expected outcomes, Vos demonstrates that networks of Dutch and Indonesian professionals are very influential in the bilateral policy process. Her opinion of this lesson is that international and bilateral cooperation is not of much use when politics determines criteria. Instead there should be open structures, in which ideas from the basis on bilateral cooperation can be discussed.

Gender, Islam, Nationalism and the State in Aceh
This book sets out to open up the space for interpretation of history and politics in Aceh which is now in a state of armed rebellion against the Indonesian government. It lays out a groundwork for analysing how female agency is constituted in Aceh, in a complex interplay of indigenous matrifocality, Islamic belief and practices, state terror, and political violence. Analysts of the current conflict in Aceh have tended to focus on present events. Scholarship in Action: Essays on the Life and Work of Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje (1857-1936)
The Dutch scholar Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje (1857–1936) was one of the most famous orientalists of his time. He acquired early fame through his daring research in Mecca in 1884-85, masterly narrated in two books and accompanied by two portfolios of photographs. As an adviser to the colonial government in the Dutch East Indies from 1889 until 1906, he was on horseback during campaigns of “pacification” and published extensively on Indonesian cultures and languages. Meanwhile he successively married two Sundanese women with whom he had several children.
