Biologie an der Universität Bonn
Als Begriff für eine ›Wissenschaft der belebten Natur‹ wird ›Biologie‹ erstmals um 1800 genutzt. Es ist daher nicht selbstverständlich, dass die Universität Bonn noch in ihrem Gründungsjahr 1818 eine Vorlesung über ›Biologie‹ anbietet. Wolfgang Alt und Klaus Peter Sauer haben nun erstmals eine ausführliche und durchgehend bebilderte Ideengeschichte der biologischen Forschung und Lehre an der Universität Bonn vorgelegt. Von der Zoologie über die Botanik und Genetik bis hin zur Entwicklung der Zellbiologie und Mikrobiologie geben sie Einblicke in die Lokalgeschichte einer sich neu etablierenden und heute zentralen universitären Wissenschaft.
The Bonn Handbook of Globality
This two-volume handbook provides readers with a comprehensive interpretation of globality through the multifaceted prism of the humanities and social sciences. Key concepts and symbolizations rooted in and shaped by European academic traditions are discussed and reinterpreted under the conditions of the global turn. Highlighting consistent anthropological features and socio-cultural realities, the handbook gathers coherently structured articles written by 110 professors in the humanities and social sciences at Bonn University, Germany, who initiate a global dialogue on meaningful and sustainable notions of human life in the age of globality. Volume 1 introduces readers to various interpretations of globality, and discusses notions of human development, communication and aesthetics. Volume 2 covers notions of technical meaning, of political and moral order, and reflections on the shaping of globality.
Philosophy of Religion in Latin America and Europe
The title of this publication suggests a double meaning: on the one hand, most of the contributions outline philosophies of religion relevant for Latin America, without, however, betraying an explicit Latin American perspective. Does not philosophical reason always articulate itself in the same way, whether in Berlin or Rio de Janeiro? On the other hand, the title refers to a specific form of philosophy that has developed regionally and bears explicit traces of its origins that differentiate it from philosophy in Europe. Does not philosophical reason always articulate itself in a specific cultural context? The charm of the book lies in the encounter of these two variants to think philosophically.
Border Transgression
This volume addresses processes of human mobility in times of crisis from different scientific perspectives and at a global and trans-regional level. The first part sets out to discuss established paradigms in migration studies and politics in order to suggest new approaches to analyse mobility, migration and to challenge boundary making approaches. The second part presents empirical cases from Latin America and Spain to demonstrate how migrants challenge, negotiate and mobilize citizenship and belonging. The third part deals with the question how belonging is produced and identity is constructed at a transnational level. New information and communication technologies, human mobility but also the mobility of concepts, ideas and values foster these collectivization processes across and within physical and symbolic borders.
