Armenian Civil Society

This book analyzes Armenian civil society in the context of post-communist democratization. It explores persistent challenges to civic engagement under Armenia’s semi-authoritarian regime, and also highlights success stories of public mobilization and social impact. Drawing on a broad range of methods and empirical sources, the book provides a comprehensive overview of the re-emerging diversity of Armenian civil society: from formal organizations to spontaneous activism. It combines a country-level analysis of broad patterns in the country’s political culture with the life stories of individual agents of change, contrasting public apathy with young activists’ enthusiasm. By exploring mobilization strategies and narratives in Armenian civil society, the book provides valuable new insights into the roots of the mass public uprising in spring 2018.

This volume overlooks the distinct expressions and awareness of volunteering in the lived reality of people from different regions of the world. By casting the net widely this book not only expands the geographic reach of experiences, models and case studies but also transcends the conventional focus on formal volunteering. It highlights institutional forms of volunteering specific to developing nations and also describes volunteering that is more loosely institutionalized, informal, and a part of solidarity and collective spirit. As a result this book provides a different look at the values, meaning, acts and expressions of volunteering. The chapters in this book consist of essays and ca...

Armenia After 2018

"This book is about the social and political developments in a highly turbulent Armenia in the period after 2018. From 2018 to 2020, the country witnessed three waves of shocks a revolution, a pandemic and a war with effects and consequences that impacted the country's social, cultural, security and political foundations. This book provides some factual and theoretical frames for understanding the country's transformations and the challenges resulting from them. In recent years civil society has been seen as a key route for democracy promotion and solving development ‘problems’ in low-income countries. However, the very concept of civil society is deeply rooted in European traditions and values. In pursuing civil society reform in non-Western countries, many scholars along with well-meaning international agencies and donor organisations fail to account for non-Western values and historical experiences. Civil Society in the Global South seeks to redress this balance by offering diverse accounts of civil society from the global South, authored by scholars and researchers who are reflecting on their observations of civil society in their own countr...

Gifts, Virtues and Obligations of University Volunteering

  • Type: Book

  • Published: 2021-11-29

  • Publisher: Routledge

This book takes a critical, grounded and ethnographic approach to elicit a deeper understanding of university volunteering. Anthropological theories of reciprocal gift exchange are used to re-visit some of the value-laden and at times conflicting ways of understanding volunteering as freely undertaken or coerced, altruistic or self-interested. It also explores how some of the changing uses and expectations of volunteering are related to the exercise of power and to the effect of social norms or structural constraints on agency. The book contains a detailed case study of a UK university, focusing on its relationships with local communities and voluntary organisations to illustrate the complex and culturally situated nature of volunteering and the gift. Joanna Puckering also draws on examples from countries such as the United States and Australia to address wider questions of why people do what they do, and why volunteering motives and outcomes attract differing interpretations. This volume will be relevant to scholars from anthropology, sociology and geography as well as those involved in the higher education and voluntary, corporate and social enterprise sectors.

"This book is written in tribute to my mother-in-law, Valentina Valerianovna Lyovina, with whom I lived under the same roof for a period of some ten years beginning in 1968. Her stories inspired me to share her life's adventures with like minded people. Valentina related the central events of her life to me during the ten-year interval ... I collected and collated the historical facts before I started writing her biography. I also interviewed the living relatives of Valentina to check their versions of her story ..."--Foreword.
