Subjects covered include Agrotechnology, Food and Food Production, Plant and Animal Sciences, Soil Science, Geo-information, Landscape and Spatial Planning, Water and Climate, Ecosystem Studies, Economics and Society.
The Opening of the Academic Year in Wageningen is a joint starting point for the entire organisation, including Wageningen University, the Van Hall Larenstein University of Applied Sciences and the nine specialised and applied DLO research institutes. The world population will strongly increase in the coming decades and prosperity will further rise. So, the demand for food, energy and water will grow significantly. But what about nature and biodiversity? Do we accept a further impact on nature development, or are we able to include nature into an integrated approach of future challenges? Nature is an asset that already plays a crucial role in not only ecological but also in economic and social developments. Wageningen know-how is helpful in understanding and further developing natural resources: ‘to explore the potential of nature to improve the quality of life’.
This book presents an innovative theory of liquid institutionalization at sea and explores the building blocks of this theory focusing in particular on institutionalization, blue governance arrangements, reflexivity and power. The book opens with an overview of stability and change in new institutional theory before moving on to discuss liquid institutionalization in more detail. The author applies this approach to three different cases: Arctic shipping; deep seabed mining; and transboundary regionalization in Europe. For each of these cases the book describes the emerging blue governance arrangements, the type of liquid institutionalization and the consequences this has for power and reflexivity.

Agricultural engineering, developed as an engineering discipline underpinned by physics, applies scientific principles, knowledge, and technological innovations in the agricultural and food industries. During the last century, there was exponential growth in engineering developments, which has improved human wellbeing and radically changed how humans interact with each other and our planet. Among these, “Agricultural Mechanization” is ranked among the top 10 in a list of 20 Top Engineering Achievements of the last century that have had the greatest impact on the quality of life. While many success stories abound, the problems of low appeal among students, identity crises, and limited job...
