Creative Transformations
In Creative Transformations, Krista Brune brings together Brazilian fiction, film, journalism, essays, and correspondence from the late nineteenth to the early twenty-first centuries. Drawing attention to the travels of Brazilian artists and intellectuals to the United States and other parts of the Americas, Brune argues that experiences of displacement have had a significant influence on their work. Across Brazilian literary and cultural history, translation becomes a way of navigating and representing the resulting encounters between languages, interactions with Spanish Americans, and negotiations of complex identities. While Creative Transformations engages extensively with theories of translation from different national and disciplinary contexts, it also constructs a vision of translation uniquely attuned to the place of Brazil in the Americas. Brune reveals the hemispheric underpinnings of works by renowned Brazilian writers such as Machado de Assis, Sousândrade, Mário de Andrade, Silviano Santiago, and Adriana Lisboa. In the process, she rethinks the dynamics between cosmopolitan and national desires and between center and periphery in global literary markets.

Selección Bogotá39 – Relatos cortos En 2007, Verónica Stigger formó parte de la selección Bogotá39, un certamen literario en el que se reunieron 39 escritores jóvenes provenientes de diecisiete países de Latinoamérica con el objetivo de destacar las nuevas voces y tendencias de la literatura latinoamericana. Durante es la contribución de la autora a la antología vinculada a Bogotá39 y que, siete años después, recupera arrobabooks. Pese al tiempo transcurrido, éste no ha hecho sino confirmar las expectativas, la ambición y la absoluta vigencia de aquella propuesta y de aquellos autores.

Este novo livro de Veronica Stigger uma das vozes mais fortes da literatura brasileira atual reúne um conto, uma peça teatral curta e um poema, formando um estranho quebra-cabeça em que, surpreendentemente, todas as peças se encaixam. O primeiro texto, 2035 , é um relato de tom kafkiano e sombrio situado num futuro distópico. Já na peça Mancha , duas personagens com o mesmo nome, Carol 1 e Carol 2, travam um diálogo entre cômico e absurdo em torno de uma mancha de sangue no chão de um apartamento. Por fim, o longo poema O coração dos homens se constrói sobre memórias de infância em que se confundem verdade e mentira, fato e ficção. Ligando os três textos, sangue, muito sangue, e um uso extremamente consciente e singular da linguagem, que, do trágico ao cômico, do melancólico ao escatológico, encontra sempre a forma e o tom precisos. Publicado originalmente na Argentina, em 2013, Sul é lançado agora em português porém, acrescido de um texto oculto, que caberá ao leitor desvelar.
Maria Martins: Tropical Fictions
Eroticism and Amazonian mythologies in the sculpture of an overlooked Brazilian Surrealist A leading figure in New York's Surrealist circles and in Latin American modernism, the Brazilian artist Maria Martins (1894-1973) was known for her bronze sculptures of hybrid and mythological figures. Through her marriage to a Brazilian diplomat, Martins built a large part of her career outside Brazil, having lived in New York in the 1940s, when she was part of the city's expat Surrealist community. This survey examines Martins' central and active role in Surrealism (in a counterpart to the narratives about her romantic involvement with Duchamp), her interpretation of Amazonian mythologies and iconography from the outset of her career, and her female perspective on themes of desire and eroticism.
