This new study of Newman's religious development, from his childhood to his conversion to Roman Catholicism, explores Newman's growth in holiness and truth, i.e. religious truth, and the mutual influence of one upon the other. The former, the author states, 'is the more difficult to explore, since it involves not only a study of words and actions but of his inner life and motivation, which are often hidden.' This exploration is undertaken here with the aid of materials not hitherto fully exploited: verses, sermons, prayers and letters both by and to Newman. The detailed treatment of Newman's inner life as revealed in his private journals - not intended for publication - shows the continuity and change involved in his growth in holiness in their proper perspective, and how his early rigorous self-examination, meditation and assiduous study of the whole of the Scriptures produced the flowering of 'realizations of the Christian mysteries, full of psychological insights and abounding in quotations from Scripture', of the Parochial and Plain Sermons.

Sermons 1824-1843

From 1824 to 1843, Newman was an active clergyman of the Church of England. Throughout these twenty years, he entered the pulpit about 1,270 times and wrote about 604 sermons. Of these, he eventually published 217 sermons which he had written and delivered; a further 246 sermons survive in manuscript in the Archives of the Birmingham Oratory, some only as fragments but the majority as full texts. Volume I was published in 1991 and Volume II in 1993. When completed, the series will consist of five volumes. Volume III contains a further fifty hitherto unpublished sermons belonging to this period. There are twenty-five sermons especially composed for Saints' Days and Holy Days and, with one exc...

Renewing Christianity

This book follows the tide of reform and renewal in Church history, and demonstrates that reform has always been an essential element of Christianity. Indeed, Christopher Bellitto emphasizes that reform should not be perceived as limited to the Reformation or Vatican II. As one learns from the author's analysis, the history of Christianity is little other than the history of reform. This sweeping assessment of Church history is both remarkable and deep, but is also highly readable. Bellitto begins with an introduction to the subject of reform and follows that with chapters on the patristic period and Carolingian Renaissance, the High Middle Ages (1050-1300), Avignon to Trent, From Trent to Modernity, and Vatican II. He ends with a conclusion that draws together the recurring themes and patterns of reform activity in the Church. In short, this is a unique book on the subject of Church reform. Renewing Christianity is useful to both scholars and non-academics alike. It is written in a "learnedly popular style," and would appeal to clergy, seminarians, academics, graduate students or anyone interested in Church reform and renewal, Church history, or historical theology. +
