Individual mobility is one of the most important needs of modern society and an important link between private, public and economic life. In contrast, transport also entails severe environmental and social burdens, foiling current efforts for sustainable development. As the main source of CO2 emissions, transport is a prominent driver for climate change, and individual car traffic is responsible for nearly a third of the total energy consumption. However, we have to consider that many commuters feel indeed very dependent on their car. Here, ridesharing promises to contribute to environmental protection, while still offering individual mobility. Although ridesharing options have been discussed since many years, internet and smartphones provide completeley new opportunities to find ridesharing partners today. Thus, this book deals with current efforts on implementing flexible internet- and phone-based ridesharing services. With a main focus on the users‘ perspective, their demands and acceptance limits, we aim to explore success factors for non-profit, but also commercial ridesharing concepts.
One of the more frequently lodged, serious, and justifiable complaints about ecocritical work is that it is insufficiently theorized. Ecocritical Theory puts such claims decisively to rest by offering readers a comprehensive collection of sophisticated but accessible essays that productively investigate the relationship between European theory and ecocritique. The genesis of Peter Handke's controversial -poetics- is investigated through an examination of key "Elfenbeinturm" essays and ORF -Bucherecke- manuscripts in which Handke's early literary preoccupations were most evident. From this a coherent and comprehensive view of the theoretical foundations of his literary concerns and practice emerges. This is followed by a detailed analysis of characteristic elements present in Handke's early narrative prose texts: "Die Hornissen, Der Hausierer, Die Angst des Tormanns beim Elfmeter, Wunschloses Ungluck" and the collection of short stories "Begrussung des Aufsichtsrats." This investigation of the early texts reveals a common triadic relationship between the highly intrusive foregrounding of the narrative constituent of these texts, the manner in which the literary reality is realized, and their central thematic concern. Handke's rather enigmatic and somewhat neglected early prose works are made very much more accessible through the insights afforded by this book."
German Text Crimes offers new perspectives on scandals and legal actions implicating writers of German literature since the 1950s. Topics range from literary echoes of the “Heidegger Affair” to recent incitements to murder businessmen (agents of American neo-liberal power) in works by Rolf Hochhuth and others. GDR songwriters’ cat-and-mouse games with the Stasi; feminist debates on pornography, around works by Charlotte Roche and Elfriede Jelinek; controversies over anti-Semitism, around Bernhard Schlink’s Der Vorleser / The Reader and Martin Walser’s lampooning of the Jewish critic Marcel Reich-Ranicki; Peter Handke’s pro-Serbian travelogue; the disputed editing of Ingeborg Bachmann’s Nachlaß; vexed relations between dramatists and directors; (ab)uses of privacy law to ‘censor’ contemporary fiction: these are among the cases of ‘text crimes’ discussed. Not all involve codified law, but all test relations between state power, civil society, media industries and artistic license.
Für die meisten Niederländer und Flamen ist Österreich in erster Linie ein beliebtes Urlaubsland, dessen Bild von den Bergen Tirols, den Wiener Lipizzanern und den vielen, vielen Heurigen geprägt ist. Dass sich hinter den Bergen eine andere Welt findet, eine überaus vielfältige und in so manchem eigenständige Literatur, ist den wenigsten bewusst. Während sich die österreichische Herkunft Thomas Bernhards und Peter Handkes schon herumgesprochen haben dürfte, verbinden – abgesehen von einem Kreise der Eingeweihten – nur die wenigsten Niederländer und Flamen Franz Werfel, Stefan Zweig, Theodor Kramer, Christoph Ransmayr und viele andere mit der 1918 aus der Donaumonarchie hervorgegangenen, 1945 ein zweites Mal gegründeten Republik. Dass die Frage nach dem spezifischen Charakter der deutschsprachigen Literatur aus Österreich im Land ihres Entstehens sehr wohl ein Thema war und ist, ist nur eines der vielen Leitmotive im vorliegenden Band über die österreichische Literatur des 20. Jahrhunderts.
