Superionic Conductors

A hundred and eighty five chemists, physicists, and engineers met in Schenectady, New York, for the three days May 10-12, 1976, to discuss the subject of Superionic Conductors. This International Conference was held at the Research and Development Center of the General Electric Company. The subject of the Conference was fast ion transport in solids. These materials have potential application in new types of batteries, fuel cells, and sensors. Some like beta alumina are under active development in nov'el new systems. Their study has also become a popular area of scientific investigation. One objective of the Conference was to provide a forum for interdisciplinary communication between chemist...

Handbook Of Solid State Batteries And Capacitors

Solid state power sources have developed remarkably in the last three decades owing to improvements in technology and a greater understanding of the underlying basic sciences. In particular, a greater impetus has recently been placed in developing and commercializing small, lightweight, and highly energetic solid state power sources driven by demands from portable consumer electronics, medical technology, sensors, and electric vehicles. This comprehensive handbook features contributions by forerunners in the field of solid state power source technology from universities, research organizations, and industry. It is directed at the physicist, chemist, materials scientist, electrochemist, elect...

Diffusion in Solids: Recent Developments provides an overview of diffusion in crystalline solids. This book discusses the various aspects of the theory of diffusion. Organized into nine chapters, this volume starts with a discussion on the process of diffusion in solids. This book then examines the tools that supplement the conventional diffusion measurements, including electromigration, ionic conductivity, isotope effects, and vacancy wind effects. This text explores the molecular dynamic calculation by which the interatomic forces must be assumed. Other chapters discuss the method of measurement of the isotope effect on diffusion, which is the most powerful method of determining relevant information about the correlation factor. This volume extensively discusses diffusion in organic and amorphous materials, as well as interstitial diffusion in solids. The final chapter deals with ionic motion and diffusion in various groups of materials called fast ionic conductors. Solid-state physicists, materials scientists, physical chemists, and electrochemists will find this book extremely useful.

Solid State Batteries: Materials Design and Optimization

The field of solid state ionics is multidisciplinary in nature. Chemists, physicists, electrochimists, and engineers all are involved in the research and development of materials, techniques, and theoretical approaches. This science is one of the great triumphs of the second part of the 20th century. For nearly a century, development of materials for solid-state ionic technology has been restricted. During the last two decades there have been remarkable advances: more materials were discovered, modem technologies were used for characterization and optimization of ionic conduction in solids, trial and error approaches were deserted for defined predictions. During the same period fundamental t...

Electrode Processes in Solid State Ionics

The idea of an "Advanced Study Institute" on the theme of electrode reactions on solid electrolytes was put forward by Dr. J. Dupuy at the meeting of the International Society for Electrochemistry in Eindhoven in September 1973. Through Dr. Dupuy, the Solid State Physics Department of Lyons University offered the Institute possibilities of accommodation in Corsica that seemed particularly tempting. The subject matter appealed to a number of people for a variety of reasons. A great deal of development work on applications comes up against interface phenomena which appreciably reduce anticipated performances. Numerous potential applications of specific electrodes or gauges appear that would benefit from a more systematic approach. From a more fundamental viewpoint, interface phenomena on ionic crystals are the subject of indepen dent investigations in quite distinct research fields such as solid state physics and electrochemistry. The choice of an interpretation from among the different models available is very often not a straightforward matter, and an attempt to promote a synthesis by bringing together the proponents of the various "schools" could not fail to be rewarding.

Critical Materials Problems in Energy Production discusses the most challenging of the materials problems in the areas of production, distribution, and energy storage. This book is a result of the Distinguished Lecture Series on "Critical Materials Problems in Energy Production sponsored by the Joint Center for Materials Science in New Mexico. This text is organized into eight sections encompassing 29 chapters that cover topics on nuclear power, materials for high-temperature applications, solar energy, direct solar conversion, coal and other fossil fuels, superconducting materials, and energy storage devices. After a brief introduction to overall perspective of the energy program, the book ...

This volume constitutes the refereed proceedings, presented during the ACPR 2019 Workshops, held in Auckland, New Zealand, in November 2019. The 17 full papers and 6 short papers were carefully reviewed and selected out of numerous submissions. The papers are organized according to the topics of the workshops: computer vision for modern vehicles; advances and applications on generative deep learning models; image and pattern analysis for multidisciplinary computational anatomy; multi-sensor for action and gesture recognition; towards the automatic data processing chain for airborne and spaceborne sensors.

Climate and Energy: The Feasibility of Controlling CO2 Emissions

Rapidly increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, emerging evidence of global warming and the threat of uncontrollable climate feedback mechan:i,sms are now triggering international action to reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases. In 1989 the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), established by the United Nations Environment Pro gramme and the World Meteorological Organization, started preparations for an international convention on climate. This convention is to be followed by protocols (agreements) on the reduction of the emissions of greenhouse gases and other measures and implementation mechanisms to preserve the global climate. After the CFC's, CO i...
