This is the autobiography of Walter Kurt Hayman. Born in Germany in 1926, he came to Britain in 1938 to escape the Nazis. Educated at Gordonstoun School in Scotland and Cambridge, he was influenced by Mary Cartwright and J. E. Littlewood. He was elected to the Royal Society in 1956 and appointed Professor of Pure Mathematics at Imperial College, London. For over 30 years there he ran a world-famous school in Complex Analysis. He then spent 10 years at York before returning to Imperial College, where he is a Senior Research Fellow. He has received many prizes, awards and honorary degrees. Twice widowed, he now lives in Gloucestershire with his third wife, Marie. He gives a frank account of a life dominated by mathematics, music, friendship, family and service. There are 15 photographs, and a full list of his 218 publications to date. An index lists all persons mentioned in the text. This paperback edition is designed to be as affordable as possible. A hard-cover edition is also available.

Research Problems in Function Theory

In 1967 Walter K. Hayman published ‘Research Problems in Function Theory’, a list of 141 problems in seven areas of function theory. In the decades following, this list was extended to include two additional areas of complex analysis, updates on progress in solving existing problems, and over 520 research problems from mathematicians worldwide. It became known as ‘Hayman's List’. This Fiftieth Anniversary Edition contains the complete ‘Hayman's List’ for the first time in book form, along with 31 new problems by leading international mathematicians. This list has directed complex analysis research for the last half-century, and the new edition will help guide future research in the subject. The book contains up-to-date information on each problem, gathered from the international mathematics community, and where possible suggests directions for further investigation. Aimed at both early career and established researchers, this book provides the key problems and results needed to progress in the most important research questions in complex analysis, and documents the developments of the past 50 years.

Proceedings of the Symposium on Complex Analysis Canterbury 1973

An international conference on complex analysis was held in Canterbury in July 1973. Some of the world's most prominent complex analysts attended and some outstanding open problems had their first solutions announced there. These are reflected in this set of Proceedings. Almost all of the contributions are abstracts of talks given at the symposium. The final part of this volume is a section on research problems contributed by members of the conference and a report on a previous collection of problems edited by Professor W. K. Hayman after an earlier conference in 1964. This book is essential reading for research workers and graduate students interested in complex analysis.

Multivalent Functions

The class of multivalent functions is an important one in complex analysis. They occur for example in the proof of De Branges' Theorem, which in 1985 settled the long-standing Bieberbach conjecture. The second edition of Professor Hayman's celebrated book contains a full and self-contained proof of this result, with a new chapter devoted to it. Another new chapter deals with coefficient differences. The text has been updated in several other ways, with recent theorems of Baernstein and Pommerenke on univalent functions of restricted growth, and an account of the theory of mean p-valent functions. In addition, many of the original proofs have been simplified. Each chapter contains examples and exercises of varying degrees of difficulty designed both to test understanding and illustrate the material.

Building on the foundation laid in the first volume of Subharmonic Functions, which has become a classic, this second volume deals extensively with applications to functions of a complex variable. The material also has applications in differential equations and differential equations and differential geometry. It reflects the increasingly important role that subharmonic functions play in these areas of mathematics. The presentation goes back to the pioneering work of Ahlfors, Heins, and Kjellberg, leading to and including the more recent results of Baernstein, Weitsman, and many others. The volume also includes some previously unpublished material. It addresses mathematicians from graduate students to researchers in the field and will also appeal to physicists and electrical engineers who use these tools in their research work. The extensive preface and introductions to each chapter give readers an overview. A series of examples helps readers test their understatnding of the theory and the master the applications.
