Rhondda' - even now, the name evokes the turbulent times when Rhondda (actually two valleys, the Fawr and Fach) was synonymous with the deep-mining of steam coal. This is a story of pioneering deep-mining and unbridled capitalism: the prospecting of two valleys, unfettered by health and safety, amid divisive industrial relations and scarce health-care. The result fired railways, steam-powered shipping and the engines of the Industrial Revolution across the world. Using a mixture of historical and modern photographs, coloured by personal testimony and memories, this book reveals the vibrant, turbulent, often tragic record of Rhondda: from pastoral vale via 'black gold'-rush to grimy industrial prime, followed by the twentieth-century economic slide, the demise of all its fifty-three collieries and today's valleys - a mainly residential landscape of green hills.
From the Cradle to the Coalmine
It is widely believed that the employment of children underground in coal mines ended in 1842. This book, in contrast, shows that young people remained an important part of the workforce up until the virtual demise of the industry in the late twentieth century. The Children's Employment Commission was established in 1840 to expose the conditions under which children had to work underground; as we might expect, public opinion was outraged by what came to light, and a law was passed to prevent all females and boys under the age of ten from working underground. However, the lack of inspectors made the law difficult to enforce, and many females and boys under ten continued to work illegally until Parliament made school attendance compulsory in the 1860s. This popular and accessible book is a rich source of information about the working lives of children and young people in the Welsh coalfields, richly illustrated to include extensive work from Amgueddfa Cymru's photographic archives.

A Boy from the Valleys
Life was difficult for a young boy growing up in the South Wales Valleys, in the 1920's. The future of anyone at that time, lead in one way or another, to mining. Working away the daylight hours in a musky, dank hole in the ground was not all it was crack up to be. It was much worse than today’s generation could ever imagine, especially when someone managed to slip the miners laxative chocolate. The reaction that an aeroplane instilled in people, when it flew over the valleys for the first time, made me want to join the Air Force. A boy could only dream of what the future held in store, but fate had different adventures set aside for me. I travelled around the valleys with a band, playing at social evenings and not just for the notoriety. Music would remain a constant through my life, no wonder I'm a Disk Jockey at the age of 76. I play anything from Strauss to Six Inch Nails, which give me the reputation of being able to play any type of venue.
