Fairacres Publications 211 Wendy Robinson’s work was primarily interpersonal and in retreat talks or lectures where she could engage with her audience directly; many of the essays here are transcriptions of those talks. Even ten years after her death, her theology and her compassion are remembered with great fondness and gratitude, and continue to resonate both with those who knew her and those who encounter her writing for the first time.

This book illustrates hitherto unexamined connections between the present state of teacher education in the UK and past models of practice. It locates contemporary debates within ongoing historical tensions over what constitutes a sound and proper start to a career in teaching. Questions as to the constituents of a professional training, the essential skills, knowledge and attitudes desired of an effective teacher, the most suitable locus of expertise, the relative roles of participants, and the balance of theory and practice lie at the heart of this book. The book reviews apprenticeship and teach-exemplar models of training, expert-novice relationships, model and demonstration teaching, sch...

Fairacres Publications 136 The English mystic Walter Hilton was born c. 1340–5 and died at the Priory of St Peter at Thurgarton, Nottinghamshire in 1396. Little is known of his life, but after beginning a legal and administrative career he attempted the solitary life, but finally discovered his true vocation as an Augustinian Canon. His spiritual writings in English and Latin are ranked alongside those of the anonymous author of The Cloud of Unknowing and Julian of Norwich, and include Angels’ Song (also translated by Rosemary Dorward and published by SLG Press in 1983), commentaries on Psalm texts, and a number of letters of spiritual guidance. Mixed Life was originally intended to be read as the third part of Hilton’s best-known work, The Scale of Perfection, and is a set of instructions for a ‘worldly lord’ on balancing the spiritual and practical aspects of leading a godly life. This new edition includes the first full print publication of a diplomatic transcription of the ‘Vernon MS’ text from which this translation was made.

The Columbia Documentary History of American Women Since 1941

From the Hoover vacuum cleaner to the fax machine, from the pill to reproductive rights, from Rosie the Riveter to Martha Stewart and Hillary Rodham Clinton, American women have grappled with a sometimes dizzying rate of social and economic change and continually shifting conceptions of gender. This collection of documents seeks to chronicle the exciting and tumultuous recent history of American women, beginning with the watershed event of World War II and the lasting impact of the war effort on women's social and economic opportunities. Subsequent documents speak to the ideas and changes brought about by the women's movement; the challenges to and defense of reproductive rights; the backlash against feminism in the name of family values; and new visions for women's lives in the twenty-first century.

SLG Press Contemplative Poetry 11 This anthology of thoughts seeks to be a various and portable nudger into the corners, plains and hilltops of all kinds of what might be called Wisdom. The poems and extracts selected here may be enough in themselves; kickers-on to bigger, longer, things, or no; touchpapers to bright thoughts either related or, in the end, unrelated to them; or a spur to read more of the same, be it poems or poets, or more writing of the thinking kind, philosophers and parsons. This collection of snippets is intended to stimulate, lead on to more. It is less an anthology, and more a trigger, leading the reader, as they dip and choose, read and leave, to whatever depth of thought in whatever area they might choose.

Fairacres Publications 188 In two thought-provoking essays Canon Griffiths reminds us that our identity as Christians is expressed through our language and focussed by the patterns of liturgical ritual that are in turn reflected in the architecture of the Christian church. Christian identity is particularly evident in the Eucharist and in our historical urge to keep watch in prayer, the practice of ‘vigil’, which plays such a prominent role in contemporary culture. By understanding our identity and our use of rituals we are able to step outside the constraints of time and proclaim that we are ready to respond to God when He reaches out to us.In two thought-provoking essays Canon Griffith...

Fairacres Publications 130 In these addresses, the expectations – true and false – of newly-ordained clergy are identified. Stressing the need for constant thanksgiving as the bedrock of a pastor’s life, the author examines the role of the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity and obedience, in providing practical and spiritual support to ministry.
