Welcome to Our World

Yet I knew even then that this whole Melbourne to London thing was over the top. It was quite outrageous. Utterly preposterous. But I was a gonertotally, hopelessly bitten. Having an adventure is easy. Step 1drive down ones street. Step 2keep driving. Step 3stop at London! Welcome to Our World is about a comfortably settled David Gairns and his teenage son Will on one extraordinary drive from Melbourne, Australia to London, England through Asia in 2010. The spark that started it, their hopes, their dreams, their doubts and stresses are all here. It tells of Wills girlfriend Lauren who just kept on popping up and of father and son bonding or not bonding at all, as so happens. It is about a real journey and a life journey, of acting the fool and finding a life. Of the highs and the lows and of the joy of being alive, of so many generous strangers who helped along the way. They hope you enjoy the drive, the experience, the journey and the adventures they encountered everywhere.

Reconstructive Surgery of the Rectum, Anus and Perineum

Reconstructive Colorectal and Anal Surgery presents a didactic discussion of complex colonic, rectal, anal, and perineal problems which require reoperative surgery. The book provides a very practical description of the management towards these problems including preoperative investigation, postoperative follow-up and detailed operative approach. The text is aimed at being relatively didactic with an algorithm approach to these complicated cases using operative photographs and composite explanatory line drawings which are complemented by ‘how-to’ guides in all cases describing the operative technical tips and pitfalls from experienced world-renowned commentators. Given the rapid change in techniques over the last 10 years newer procedures will be incorporated. This book will be essential reading for all colorectal surgeons and trainees, general surgeons and trainees, gynecologists as well as specialist nurses in the OR room.

The Letters and Diaries of John Henry Newman

John Henry Newman (1801-90) was brought up in the Church of England in the Evangelical tradition. An Oxford graduate and Fellow of Oriel College, he was appointed Vicar of St Mary's Oxford in 1828; from 1839 onwards he began to have doubts about the claims of the Anglican Church and in 1845 he was received into the Roman Catholic Church. He was made a Cardinal in 1879. His influence on both the restoration of Roman Catholicism in England and the advance of Catholic ideas in the Church of England was profound. Volume VIII covers a turbulent period in Newman's life with the publication of Tract 90. His attempt to show the compatibility of the 39 Articles with Catholic doctrine caused a storm both in the University of Oxford and in the Church. He and others were horrified by the establishment of a joint Anglo-Prussian Bishopric in Jerusalem, considering it an attempt to give Apostolical succession to an heretical church. In 1842 he moved away from the hubbub of Oxford life to nearby Littlemore.
