The Future of European Archaeology
  • Language: en

The Future of European Archaeology

As head of the Dutch Archaeological Service, Willem Willems is uniquely in touch with the movement towards greater archaeological cooperation in Europe. As political borders lose their importance, archaeology is forced into the forefront of the quest for a new cultural identity to reflect both the unity and heterogenity of European society. With extensive references to European legislation and community programmes Dr Willems sets out his controversial vision of a pan-European coordinating body for archaeological research and heritage management in the 21st century. Professional archaeologists cannot afford to ignore this authoritative vision of a centrally-organised future.

Quality Management in Archaeology deals with the effects of the profound changes that have had an impact on the discipline of archaeology all over the world. In North America, in Europe and increasingly in other parts of the world, new legislation and international treaties have changed its position in society. What was once a university based research activity by a limited number of academics has become a socially relevant field with many practitioners that are mostly employed in some branch of archaeological resource management. Archaeology has been successful in persuading governments and the general public that more should be done to preserve archaeological heritage and to investigate it...

Taking Archaeology out of Heritage

Archaeology has, on the whole, tended to dominate the development of public policies and practices applicable to what is often referred to as “heritage”. This book aims to examine the conflation of heritage with archaeology that has occurred as a result. To do so, it asks whether archaeology can usefully contribute to critical understandings of heritage, which, the volume contends, must consider heritage both in terms of what it is and the cultural, social and political work it does in contemporary societies. Archaeologists have been very successful in protecting what they perceive to be their database—a success that owes much to the development and maintenance of a suite of heritage m...

In the Dutch archaeological community, the Roman Villa of Maasbracht has become famous for the beautiful remains of murals that have survived to this day. Almost all of this material was found in the infill of the stone cellar, a veritable time capsule that has been excavated with much patience and care. The first field campaign in 1981 consisted of some four trial trenches excavated by members of the local archaeological society. These yielded amongst others foundation trenches of walls and floors of mortar and rubble from the Roman period. This was in 1982 cause for the State Service for Arc.
