The Portland Vase
The Portland Vase is the most famous cameo-glass vessel from antiquity, probably made during the reign of the Roman Emperor Augustus (27BC - AD14). The scenes on the vessel have long perplexed and enchanted in equal measure. The subject is clearly one of love and marriage, but who are the figures and are they historical or mythological? This book offers an exciting new reading of the vase, setting it in the context of the dramatic relationships between the houses of Octavian, Antony and Cleopatra. It also explores the lively history of the vase, from the earliest records in Italy in 1601, to its purchase by Sir William Hamilton and the dukes of Portland, and its abiding influence on British craftsmen such as Josiah Wedgwood whose copies helped to make it famous.

Charterhouse Square
The story of London's Clerkenwell and Smithfield neighbourhood, from prehistory through to the present day, is illustrated by archaeological investigations undertaken as part of the Crossrail Central development. Excavation showed how, from being on the margins of the city, this area was occupied by religious houses and a cattle market, before developing into a densely packed suburb as London's population exploded. Submerged Prehistory
Major events of human prehistory such as the post-glacial recolonization of Northern Europe and the spread of agriculture through the Mediterranean took place on landscapes that are now, at least partially, underwater. Large parts of this submerged terrain are accessible to divers and can be investigated archaeologically. Prehistoric underwater research has emerged in recent decades as a distinct sub-discipline, developing approaches and methodologies that can be applied in coastal regions worldwide. As a result there is growing awareness of the potential for underwater archaeology to transform our ideas about the course of prehistory. This volume examines existing practice and new developments in the field of submerged prehistoric landscape research. Constructed in 1297−1300 for King Edward I, the Coronation Chair ranks amongst the most remarkable and precious treasures to have survived from the Middle Ages. It incorporated in its seat a block of sandstone, which the king seized at Scone, following his victory over the Scots in 1296. Forms of Dwelling
The concept of a socially constructed space of human activity in areas of everyday actions, as initially proposed in the field of anthropology by Tim Ingold, has actually been much more applied in archaeology. In this wide-ranging collection of 13 papers, including a re-assessment by Ingold himself, contributors show why it has been so influential, with papers ranging from the study of Mesolithic to historic and contemporary archaeology, revisiting different research themes, such as Ingold’s own Lapland study, and the development of landscape archaeology.
