Mary Mercy Moor (1793-1835) was born in London, England. Her father died in her infancy and her mother died at 8 years of age. She had a strong desire to be used as a missionary. She married William Ellis in 1815 and left for the South Seas in 1816. After a 13-month journey they arrived in Tahiti and began their missionary work. They transferred to the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii) in 1823. They traveled back to England in 1825 because of Mary's poor health and William started his lecturing tour. She endured years of sickness and was an example of honoring God in affliction. "The course of her life, marked by unusual variety and incident, the correctness of her principles, the maturity of her Christian character, and, by the Divine blessing, her high attainments in Christian excellence, her patience in tribulation, and rich experience of Divine goodness under unusually long and complicated trials, are peculiarly adapted to impart instruction and consolation to all who are striving to be followers of those "who through faith and patience inherit the promises."

Journal of William Ellis

The Journal of William Ellis is a classic of Pacific literature, ranking with the journals of Captain Cook and his men as a record of life and customs of the traditional Hawaiians. No other book rivals it as an account of the life of the Hawaiians in the early 19th century. For readers not yet acquainted with it, there is the pleasure awaiting them of a new and eciting venture into Hawaiian history. William Ellis (1794-1872) a young English missionary with a strong ethnological bent, was an explorer with a keen eye for local color and detail. As one member of a pioneering group that undertook a thorough survey of the island of Hawaii he made excellent use of his talents to set down everything he and his colleagues could learn about the region and the people. The journal is presented here in digital format without abridgments and much in the same format with which it was introduced to its original audience. The original illustrations are retained--the new introduction and the index--are designed to enhance its value. The reader is certain to find it worth every moment of his time.

From humble origins, and trained by the London Missionary Society in theology, printing and rudimentary medicine, William Ellis (1794–1872) sailed for the Society Islands in 1816. He found himself at the cusp of major cultural change as Western influences affected the indigenous Polynesians. During his time there, Ellis became a skilled linguist and able chronicler of the traditional yet rapidly shifting way of life. He succeeded in capturing vivid stories of a leisured people who, without written language, had developed a rich oral tradition, social structure and belief system. Published in 1829, this two-volume collection proved to be an important reference work, notably for its natural history; it soon accompanied Darwin aboard the Beagle. Volume 1 describes early missions on Tahiti, Moorea and Huahine, including the development of Tahitian orthography and printing. In Volume 2, Ellis continues his anthropological observations on Huahine and Raiatea.
