The earliest known Darrell was living in Yorkshire at the time of Henry III. The seventh Darrell of Sessay (Yorkshire) had three sons. The youngest married the heiress of Thomas Calston of Littlecote, Wiltshire and became the ancestor of the Darrells of Littlecote. Thomas' first son was the great-grandfather of Jane Seymour, mother of Edward VI. The Darrell family became a powerful family of courtiers during the reign of Henry VIII. William Darrell, the son of Sir Edward Darrell, was born 1540 on the family's estates in Wiltshire. William suffered from inter-familial intrigue and heavy debts after the early death of his father. By the time of the reign of Elizabeth I, William had fought to restore some of his rightful wealth and power. Thus, he became an influential courtier, related at least half of the other powerful courtier families of Seymour, Grey, Knolles and Boleyn. Includes Darrell correspondence, papers and other information.
