William Ballard
William Ballard (1732-1799), son of William Ballard, was born in Scotland and came to Philadelphia ca. 1746-47. He was in Orange County, Virginia by 1758. He married Elizabeth Steppe and later moved to Monroe County, West Virginia in 1793. Descendants lived in West Virginia, Virginia, and elsewhere.

Edward Ballard
Ballard kept this account book during his time at seminary and St. Stephen's. It includes entries for his seminary tuition payments, church expenses, and various personal expenses, including those for food, clothing, and stationary. Ballard also listed books purchased between 1826 and 1836; he bought a variety of religious literature, dictionaries, geographies, atlases, and almanacs. At the end of the volume is a list of subscribers to the Boston periodical Christian Witness between 1836 and 1843.

"The Popham Colony" is written by William Frederick Poole, Frederic Kidder, and Edward Ballard. It is a book in which the arguments for and against the historical claims of the English Colony that landed at the mouth of the Kennebec River, August 19, (O. S.) 1607, are presented in an able and comprehensive manner. The articles, when they appeared in the columns of a daily newspaper, attracted much attention; and, as they contain matters of permanent historical interest, the authors have deemed them worthy of preservation in a collected form.
