Lord Salisbury's World
Lord Salisbury (1830–1903) is now a subject of intense historical attention. This important study moves away from conventional biography and presents an original portrait of the mental world inhabited by late Victorian Conservatives at the time when their world-view was coming under severe strain. At the centre of the picture is the 3rd Marquess of Salisbury, but Lord Salisbury's World does not simply tell the story of his life and politics. Instead, it asks sensitive questions about how the political, intellectual and religious environments of the late Victorian period seemed to one of its sharpest intellects, and it situates Salisbury and his immediate entourage in a wide landscape of relationships, perceptions and problems. The Early Jews and Muslims of England and Wales
This book proposes that Jews were present in England in substantial numbers from the Roman Conquest forward. Indeed, there has never been a time during which a large Jewish-descended, and later Muslim-descended, population has been absent from England. Contrary to popular history, the Jewish population was not expelled from England in 1290, but rather adopted the public face of Christianity, while continuing to practice Judaism in secret. Crypto-Jews and Crypto-Muslims held the highest offices in the land, including service as archbishops, dukes, earls, kings and queens. Among those proposed to be of Jewish ancestry are the Tudor kings and queens, Queen Elizabeth I, William the Conqueror, and Thomas Cromwell. Documentaton in support of this revisionist history includes DNA studies, genealogies, church records, place names and the Domesday Book.
Figures of Conversion
Between the 1870s-90s, considerable attention was paid to Jews and Judaism by English critics and writers. Argues that the consideration of Jews by English writers was often in the context of their efforts to describe and improve the English character. Observes that alongside English antisemitism there existed English attitudes which were in effect protective of the Jews. These included the Evangelical Revival's desire to both protect and convert the Jew, the English self-definition as both tolerant and believing in God (in contrast with intolerant Spain of the Inquisition and godless France of the Revolution), and the view expressed in George Eliot's "Daniel Deronda" which was affirmative of Judaism and the quest for a Jewish national homeland.
