The Economics of the Indian Ocean Slave Trade in the Nineteenth Century
First Published in 1989. Well over a million slaves were exported from Indian Ocean and Red Sea ports in Eastern Africa during the nineteenth century, and millions more were shifted around the interior of the continent and along the coast of East Africa. And yet we still know remarkably little about this great movement of people, particularly from an economic point of view. This is a collection of twelve essays looking at the economics of the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea Slave trades of the nineteenth century.

Hadhrami Traders, Scholars and Statesmen in the Indian Ocean, 1750s-1960s
This volume covers the long neglected history of Hadhramaut (southern Arabia) during the modern colonial era, together with the history of Hadhrami "colonies" in the Malay world, southern India, the Red Sea, and East Africa. After an introduction placing Hadhramis in the context of other diasporas, there are sections on local and international politics, social stratification and integration, religious and social reform, and economic dynamics. The conclusion brings the story to the present day and outlines a research agenda. Many aspects of Indian Ocean history are illuminated by this book, notably the role of non-Western merchants in the spread of capitalism, Islamisation and the controversies which raged within Islam, British and Ottoman strategic concerns, social antagonisms in southern Arabia, and the cosmopolitan character of coastal societies.
Slaves, Peasants and Capitalists in Southern Angola 1840-1926
This book examines the history of the colonial conquest of a neglected region of Angola from an alternative perspective. Dr Clarence-Smith has used advances in Marxist theory to develop a model of the early colonial period which differs greatly from the established historiography of `African resistance'. Although the main focus is on local socio-economic structures, one chapter places the region in the wider context of the political economy of the partition of Africa, with strong emphasis on the economic motivations of Portugal. A brief epilogue brings the story in outline to the end of Portuguese colonialism. The rest of the book analyses colonial society and African peasant societies in turn. Capitalist relations of production were generally predominant in local colonial society, but slavery persisted into the 1910s and was followed by a system of forced labour.
