No More Pandemics

This book proposes a concrete path to bring an end to pandemics and achieve a world without infectious diseases, suggesting an escape from the long history of infectious diseases that have brought misery and confusion to humanity. The book presents an Mikawa-Kase-AQIP model to illuminate the generation of infection units originating from the lungs, where viral proliferation occurs. It further elucidates the theoretical distribution of viruses entrapped within aerosol particles. It is entirely possible to avoid infection using today’s science and technology, if we all understand, share, and implement an air ventilation approach which will stop viruses from entering the body. The challenge to eradicate future pandemics must be confronted now. The aim in this book is to present the answer.

The Handbook of Bloodstain Pattern Analysis captures the latest understanding of the science that supports bloodstain pattern analysis (BPA) and includes the results of numerous research studies using modern technologies not found in previously published books. It provides the BPA community with a modern, up-to-date reference and training manual to outline and validate the utility, repeatability, and reliability of BPA science. BPA has recently been presented in the news media as an example of “junk” science used in a handful of cases involving wrongful convictions. However, the reality is that the primary issue for BPA in these wrongful convictions is not the science: it is the result o...

Coffee

This engaging guide traces the history, cultivation, and culture of coffee, as well as the major factors influencing the industry today. Robert Thurston provides a readable, concise overview of coffee from the time the seeds of the coffee fruit are planted to the latest ideas in roasting and making beverages. He considers cultivation and its challenges, especially climate change; new research on hybridization; the history of coffee and cultural change surrounding it around the world; devices, new and old, for making coffee drinks; the issue of organic versus conventional agriculture; and the health benefits of the brew. The first book that coffee lovers naturally will turn to, it will also appeal to anyone interested in globalization, climate change, and social justice.

Astronomers as Diplomats

This book illuminates a few highly significant events in history in which astronomers have helped keep contacts between astronomers of different states in moments of international political tensions or even crises. The chapters, written by 20 international authors, focus on four periods where astronomers were particularly active in international relations: 1. The WWI period, the epoch of the creation of the IAU, in the context of the simultaneous creation of other scientific unions. The book also singles out the important role of A.S. Eddington and his network “across forbidden borders”. 2. The Cold war period and its consequences, when several countries were divided between opposite blo...
