The first folder consists of letters to Young from various businesses. Several are from his brother, Stephen Young (1766- ) in Scotland, who provided Young with books to sell in Philadelphia. In 1803 he sent to Young 73 pounds' worth of books and referred to the possibility of "a new war with France." Stephen also requested specific book titles to be sent to Scotland for sale. The letters from Scotland also include family news. Several contain invoices attached to the letters. In 1817 Stephen Young refers to U.S. duties on the importation of cudbear (dye from lichens).
