The port town of Winchelsea is mentioned in most books which discuss medieval England, mainly concentrating on the town as a member of the Cinque Ports. This monograph suggests that Winchelsea may have been considerably larger and more influential during the 13th and 14th centuries, than is usually considered to be the case.
