Winkelmann and his Century

A new 2023 translation into modern American English of Goethe's 1805 "Winkelmann und sein Jahrhundert". This edition contains an Afterword by the Translator, a Timeline of Goethe’s Life & Works and a Glossary of Philosophic Terminology used by Goethe. "Winkelmann and His Century," compiled in 1805 by Goethe from letters he had written on Winkelmann, stands as an exploration of art history, Aesthetics and the influence of Johann Joachim Winkelmann, a prominent German art historian, on European art. With sophisticated vacademic rigor, Goethe examines the cultural and intellectual landscape of the 18th century, focusing on the transformative impact of Winkelmann's theories on the understanding and appreciation of art. He delves into the interplay between art, culture, and intellectual discourse, shedding light on the ways in which Winkelmann's ideas shaped artistic movements and informed aesthetic sensibilities.

The Gromov-Winkelmann Theorem for Flexible Varieties

An affine variety X of dimension e"2 is called flexible if its special automorphism group SAut(X) acts transitively on the smooth locus Xreg [1]. Recall that SAut(X) is the subgroup of the automorphism group Aut(X) generated by all one-parameter unipotent subgroups [1]. Given a normal, flexible, affine variety X and a closed subvariety Y in X of codimension at least 2, we show that the pointwise stabilizer subgroup of Y in the group SAut(X) acts infinitely transitively on the complement XnY, that is, m-transitively for any m e"1. More generally we show such a result for any quasi-affine variety X and codimension e"2 subset Y of X. In the particular case of X = An, n e"2, this yields a Theorem of Gromov and Winkelmann [5], [13].

Econometric Analysis of Count Data

Econometric Analysis of Count Data

Graduate students and researchers are provided with an up-to-date survey of statistical and econometric techniques for the analysis of count data, with a focus on conditional distribution models. Proper count data probability models allow for rich inferences, both with respect to the stochastic count process that generated the data, and with respect to predicting the distribution of outcomes. The book starts with a presentation of the benchmark Poisson regression model. Alternative models address unobserved heterogeneity, state dependence, selectivity, endogeneity, underreporting, and clustered sampling. Testing and estimation is discussed from frequentist and Bayesian perspectives. Finally, applications are reviewed in fields such as economics, marketing, sociology, demography, and health sciences. The fourth edition contains several new sections, for example on nonnested hurdle models, quantile regression and on software. Many other sections have been entirely rewritten and extended.

This short novel is one of the few that has a person with disabilities as the main character ... It breaches a wall to include people with disabilities into the community. ... brings us into the daily life of a kid in a wheelchair who just wants to be "normal" ... funny ... a real character ..."--Back cover
