The Winning Moment

THE WINNING MOMENT series is a compilation of my life. Part 2 is primarily about high school and deals with meeting Rod Harkleroad. He was my high school football coach and the original reason I wrote this series of books. Rod took a rag tag bunch of wannabees and transformed them into a force to be reckoned with! Everybody needs to learn how to win, particularly stroke survivors like me, so you can be responsible for your own resurrection. If you can believe in yourself and what you're doing, then anything is possible. I read all of the time about stroke survivors who declare that they are worthless and can't do anything. My response to that would be, "What can't you do?" with an active mind and a great caregiver. My times playing for Harkleroad were easy to remember because it ranked right up there with the most fun I ever had! This experience was truly a game changer for me and hopefully it will be for you too.

From Ancient Greece to the Beijing Olympics, sport has delivered thrilling victories and gut-wrenching defeats, but moments of good sportsmanship are increasingly rare. Is chivalry dead? Or have rumours of its demise been exaggerated? Whether displayed by an Australian sculler or an Egyptian judoka, sportsmanship has come in many guises. It's Not the Winning that Counts celebrates the Boy's Own heroism of yachtsman Pete Goss's mercy dash across the Southern Ocean to rescue a capsized French rival; recalls the high ideals of the gentleman-amateurs of the Corinthian Football Club; salutes Freddie Flintoff, hero of the 2005 Ashes, commiserating with an opponent before celebrating with team-mates; and takes its hat off to Jack Nicklaus, conceding a two-foot putt on the final green of the 1969 Ryder Cup. At its best, sportsmanship has reverberated around the world - from German athlete Lutz Long publicly befriending the black American runner Jesse Owens at the 1936 Berlin Olympics to Russian chess player Boris Spassky conducting himself impeccably during his Cold War showdown with Bobby Fischer.

Would you walk away from a game of checkers after being jumped one time? Of course not. You still have eighteen pieces left and plenty of opportunities to win. But as adults we lose sight of the life's entire board. Once we mess up, we think the game is over. Winning the Moment is a guide to living the life you want and becoming the person you want to be. In engaging, can't-put-it-down storytelling, Cody Adent shows how much life has to offer when you change your mindset and focus. As a species, we have preconditioned believes about all facets of life that we never take the time to question. Everyone is in different spectrums of their lives and we don't take enough time to define for ourselv...

Stuck in a Moment

For some players, the final whistle heralds the beginning of an infinitely more difficult chapter in their lives. Some simply find it impossible to cope, replacing one addiction with another. Not well known is the story of Paul Vaessen, perhaps the most powerful and tragic tale of them all. Paul was the Bermondsey boy who rose from working-class roots to overnight fame in Turin when in April 1980, as an unknown 18-year-old, he scored one of the most dramatic goals in Arsenal's distinguished history. But all too soon Paul would discover how fragile and fickle the world of football could be as he experienced unforgiving injuries, loss of form and merciless barracking by his own fans. Just three years down the line, he was on the scrapheap, discarded by the game he'd devoted his young life to, and descending quickly into the only other world he knew, that of drugs. Paul would spend his lonely final days reliving his moment of glory with anybody willing to listen, that one moment in which he had effectively become stuck.
