This volume in the U.S. Army' Center of Military History series, U.S. Army in World War II, is introductory to a series on the European Theater of Operations. The book deals with the development of strategy and planning for the attack on northwest Europe in 1944 and with the first month of operations establishing Allied armies in France. The first 7 chapters (c. 2/3) of the book are concerned with the prelude to the 6 June assault: the preparations and discussions of strategy on both the Allied and German sides from 1941 to 1944. The remaining 3 chapters describe the combat operations of the First U.S. Army in Normandy from 6 June to 1 July 1944. Includes black and white photos and a portfolio of maps.

Clifford Barnard became a conscientious objector after leaving school, and joined the Friends Ambulance Unit, being part of the team in North-West Europe that relieved Sandbostel concentration camp in 1945. He continued as a British Red Cross worker until 1947. -- Back cover
Overturning the myth of the Mediterranean Theatre as a sideshow to the massive land war in Europe, a history of World War II explores the important military movements within this region that made it the pivotal struggle in the war.
American Women during World War II documents the lives and stories of women who contributed directly to the war effort via official and semi-official military organizations, as well as the millions of women who worked in civilian defense industries, ranging from aircraft maintenance to munitions manufacturing and much more. It also illuminates how the war changed the lives of women in more traditional home front roles. All women had to cope with rationing of basic household goods, and most women volunteered in war-related programs. Other entries discuss institutional change, as the war affected every aspect of life, including as schools, hospitals, and even religion. American Women during World War II provides a handy one-volume collection of information and images suitable for any public or professional library.
This collection of stories of service from the home front and front lines will provoke memories and thoughtful reflection and truly celebrate the sacrifices made by the millions of veterans who have fought to defend America's freedom.
