Subdifferentials

The subject of the present book is sub differential calculus. The main source of this branch of functional analysis is the theory of extremal problems. For a start, we explicate the origin and statement of the principal problems of sub differential calculus. To this end, consider an abstract minimization problem formulated as follows: x E X, f(x) --+ inf. Here X is a vector space and f : X --+ iR is a numeric function taking possibly infinite values. In these circumstances, we are usually interested in the quantity inf f( x), the value of the problem, and in a solution or an optimum plan of the problem (i. e. , such an x that f(x) = inf f(X», if the latter exists. It is a rare occurrence to...

Hemivariational Inequalities

The aim of the present book is the formulation, mathematical study and numerical treatment of static and dynamic problems in mechanics and engineering sciences involving nonconvex and nonsmooth energy functions, or nonmonotone and multivalued stress-strain laws. Such problems lead to a new type of variational forms, the hemivariational inequalities, which also lead to multivalued differential or integral equations. Innovative numerical methods are presented for the treament of realistic engineering problems. This book is the first to deal with variational theory of engineering problems involving nonmonotone multivalue realations, their mechanical foundation, their mathematical study (existen...

Comprehensive Coordination Chemistry II (CCC II) is the sequel to what has become a classic in the field, Comprehensive Coordination Chemistry, published in 1987. CCC II builds on the first and surveys new developments authoritatively in over 200 newly comissioned chapters, with an emphasis on current trends in biology, materials science and other areas of contemporary scientific interest.

Gasotransmitters

Gasotransmitters are gas molecules produced endogenously in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells for signalling purposes. This book provides, for the first time, a comprehensive description and systematic look at all gasotransmitters, established or proposed, since their detection in 2002. The content and scope covers the production, metabolism, and signalling roles of gasotransmitters. Conceptual advances, scientific discoveries and newly developed techniques described in this book influence our understanding of fundamental molecular and cellular events in biology and medicine. This book serves as the state-of-the-art book for undergraduate and graduate students as well as post-doctoral fellows in biomedical disciplines and toxicologists studying the toxic mechanisms of gasotransmitters in the environment. It will also be welcomed by researchers in university and research institutes, government agencies, pharmaceutical and medical instrument industry, and clinical practice.

Lectures on Finite Fields

Lectures on Finite Fields

The theory of finite fields encompasses algebra, combinatorics, and number theory and has furnished widespread applications in other areas of mathematics and computer science. This book is a collection of selected topics in the theory of finite fields and related areas. The topics include basic facts about finite fields, polynomials over finite fields, Gauss sums, algebraic number theory and cyclotomic fields, zeros of polynomials over finite fields, and classical groups over finite fields. The book is mostly self-contained, and the material covered is accessible to readers with the knowledge of graduate algebra; the only exception is a section on function fields. Each chapter is supplied with a set of exercises. The book can be adopted as a text for a second year graduate course or used as a reference by researchers.

Computed Tomography

The book offers a comprehensive and user-oriented description of the theoretical and technical system fundamentals of computed tomography (CT) for a wide readership, from conventional single-slice acquisitions to volume acquisition with multi-slice and cone-beam spiral CT. It covers in detail all characteristic parameters relevant for image quality and all performance features significant for clinical application. Readers will thus be informed how to use a CT system to an optimum depending on the different diagnostic requirements. This includes a detailed discussion about the dose required and about dose measurements as well as how to reduce dose in CT. All considerations pay special attenti...

This book is written as a guide to industrial professionals, young engineers, entrepreneurs, and industrialists, and other stakeholders who need a huge energy in process industries in different forms through industrial/process equipment for several human needs. But the performance and efficiency of the equipment are not really taken care of during the operations and processes, which may be due to the dearth of proper knowledge or ignorance. Because of that, a large quantity of energy remains unutilized or wastage causing excess energy costs and subsequently generation of a huge quantity of carbon footprint indirectly which could be saved by proper performance and efficient management, and he...

Algebraic and Analytic Geometry of Fans

Algebraic and Analytic Geometry of Fans

A set which can be defined by systems of polynomial inequalities is called semialgebraic. When such a description is possible locally around every point, by means of analytic inequalities varying with the point, the set is called semianalytic. If one single system of strict inequalities is enough, either globally or locally at every point, the set is called basic. The topic of this work is the relationship between these two notions. Namely, Andradas and Ruiz describe and characterize, both algebraically and geometrically, the obstructions for a basic semianalytic set to be basic semialgebraic. Then they describe a special family of obstructions that suffices to recognize whether or not a basic semianalytic set is basic semialgebraic. Finally, they use the preceding results to discuss the effect on basicness of birational transformations.

The concept of completely regular codes was introduced by Delsarte in his celebrated 1973 thesis, which created the field of Algebraic Combinatorics. This notion was extended by several authors from classical codes over finite fields to codes in distance-regular graphs. Half a century later, there was no book dedicated uniquely to this notion. Most of Delsarte examples were in the Hamming and Johnson graphs. In recent years, many examples were constructed in other distance regular graphs including q-analogues of the previous, and the Doob graph. Completely Regular Codes in Distance Regular Graphs provides, for the first time, a definitive source for the main theoretical notions underpinning this fascinating area of study. It also supplies several useful surveys of constructions using coding theory, design theory and finite geometry in the various families of distance regular graphs of large diameters. Features Written by pioneering experts in the domain Suitable as a research reference at the master’s level Includes extensive tables of completely regular codes in the Hamming graph Features a collection of up-to-date surveys.
