Rethinking Participation in Global Governance
Global governance involves the exercise of power, beyond a single state, to influence behaviour, to generate resources, or to allocate authority. Regulatory structures, and law of all kinds, increasingly shape the nature, use, and effects of such power. These dynamic processes of ordering and governance blend the extra- national with the national, the public with the private, the political and economic with the social and cultural. Issues of effectiveness, justice, voice, and inequality in these processes are growing in importance. This series features exceptional works of original research and theory-both sector-specific and conceptual-that carry forward the serious understanding and evaluation of these processes of global governance and the role of law and institutions within them. Contributions from all disciplines are welcomed. The series aims especially to deepen scholarship and thinking in international law, international politics, comparative law and politics, and public and private global regulation. Epidemiology, Evidence-Based Care, and Outcomes in Spinal Cord Injury
Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a life altering condition that has a profound effect on an individual’s motor, sensory and autonomic functions which impacts their ability to participate in society and decreases their quality of life. There are emerging innovations that can help restore neurological function and existing best practices that can be implemented today to improve care, however these are not consistently applied in practice or understood by individuals with SCI and their families. It is estimated to take an average of 17 years for research evidence to be translated into practice. To shorten this timeframe, there is a need to: understand the current epidemiology of SCI in the context of an aging population, quantify the economic impact, determine the effect of the injury on outcomes (e.g. neurology, function, mortality, quality of life), and ensure the knowledge is implemented so individuals living with SCI can benefit.

This book explores the shifting nature of physician–patient relationship in China. Specifically, it takes the physician–patient relationship during the barefoot doctor program in 1968–1978, the marketization of healthcare in 1978–2002, and the healthcare reform in 2003–2020 as three historical periods, illustrating how the nature of the physician–patient relationship has changed over time. Analyzing the ways in which law and social policies—involving the doctrine of informed consent, public hospital reform, and systemic healthcare reform—have in different ways shaped and changed the practices of physicians and patients, which illustrates how the bond between them threatens to collapse. With a uniquely vivid depiction of Chinese healthcare issues, this book will interest sociologists, China scholars and more.
