Introduction to Differential and Algebraic Topology

Topology as a subject, in our opinion, plays a central role in university education. It is not really possible to design courses in differential geometry, mathematical analysis, differential equations, mechanics, functional analysis that correspond to the temporary state of these disciplines without involving topological concepts. Therefore, it is essential to acquaint students with topo logical research methods already in the first university courses. This textbook is one possible version of an introductory course in topo logy and elements of differential geometry, and it absolutely reflects both the authors' personal preferences and experience as lecturers and researchers. It deals with th...

Condensing Multivalued Maps and Semilinear Differential Inclusions in Banach Spaces

The theory of set-valued maps and of differential inclusion is developed in recent years both as a field of his own and as an approach to control theory. The book deals with the theory of semilinear differential inclusions in infinite dimensional spaces. In this setting, problems of interest to applications do not suppose neither convexity of the map or compactness of the multi-operators. These assumption implies the development of the theory of measure of noncompactness and the construction of a degree theory for condensing mapping. Of particular interest is the approach to the case when the linear part is a generator of a condensing, strongly continuous semigroup. In this context, the existence of solutions for the Cauchy and periodic problems are proved as well as the topological properties of the solution sets. Examples of applications to the control of transmission line and to hybrid systems are presented.

Quantum Bounded Symmetric Domains

Quantum Bounded Symmetric Domains

Explores the basic theory of quantum bounded symmetric domains. The area became active in the late 1990s at a junction of noncommutative complex analysis and extensively developing theory of quantum groups. In a surprising advance of the theory of quantum bounded symmetric domains, it turned out that many classical problems admit elegant quantum analogs. Some of those are expounded in the book.

Nonlinear Wave Dynamics

At the end of the twentieth century, nonlinear dynamics turned out to be one of the most challenging and stimulating ideas. Notions like bifurcations, attractors, chaos, fractals, etc. have proved to be useful in explaining the world around us, be it natural or artificial. However, much of our everyday understanding is still based on linearity, i. e. on the additivity and the proportionality. The larger the excitation, the larger the response-this seems to be carved in a stone tablet. The real world is not always reacting this way and the additivity is simply lost. The most convenient way to describe such a phenomenon is to use a mathematical term-nonlinearity. The importance of this notion,...

Advanced Electromagnetism: Foundations: Theory And Applications

Advanced Electromagnetism: Foundations, Theory and Applications treats what is conventionally called electromagnetism or Maxwell's theory within the context of gauge theory or Yang-Mills theory. A major theme of this book is that fields are not stand-alone entities but are defined by their boundary conditions. The book has practical relevance to efficient antenna design, the understanding of forces and stresses in high energy pulses, ring laser gyros, high speed computer logic elements, efficient transfer of power, parametric conversion, and many other devices and systems. Conventional electromagnetism is shown to be an underdeveloped, rather than a completely developed, field of endeavor, with major challenges in development still to be met.

The Linear Algebra a Beginning Graduate Student Ought to Know

Linear algebra is a living, active branch of mathematics which is central to almost all other areas of mathematics, both pure and applied, as well as computer science, the physical and social sciences, and engineering. It entails an extensive corpus of theoretical results as well as a large body of computational techniques. The book is intended to be used in one of several possible ways: (1) as a self-study guide; (2) as a textbook for a course in advanced linear algebra, either at the upper-class undergraduate level or at the first-year graduate level; or (3) as a reference book. It is also designed to prepare a student for the linear algebra portion of prelim exams or PhD qualifying exams. The volume is self-contained to the extent that it does not assume any previous formal knowledge of linear algebra, though the reader is assumed to have been exposed, at least informally, to some basic ideas and techniques, such as the solution of a small system of linear equations over the real numbers. More importantly, it does assume a seriousness of purpose and a modicum of mathematical sophistication. The book also contains over 1000 exercises, many of which are very challenging.
