Betrayal has, in all probability, existed as long as humanity has; it is found in the ebb and flow of life itself in recent or in ancient times, in religious texts or in literary works, in the causes of wars on historical inscriptions or in newspapers today. In this play, Yakup Almelek starts with the results of betrayal. The play begins with scenes of stale everyday life, and in the final scenes dredges up the truth lurking behind all these scenes: a surprisingly tawdry and contentious truth with no single, easy interpretation. Beyond Betrayal tells the story of two brothers whose lifestyles and worldviews are diametrically opposed to each other. The difference between good or bad is rarely clear-cut and seldom easy to extricate from the interplay of action, motivation, and consequence. Do the consequences of a morally reprehensible action constitute its own punishment?
Businessman Ahmet Gr is left head to head with hostess Ayse because the guest he is waiting for from Japan is three hours late. But is three hours enough to spice up two people's lives? The Gift is Yakup Almeleks sixth play. In the everyday give and take between people in their personal and professional lives, where is the line between mutual self-interest and mutual altruism? The exchange of gifts forges special bonds between people. It cements existing relationships and paves the way for new ones. Is there ever such a thing as a free gift with no strings attached? If not, what lies hidden at the end of the chain of exchange and reciprocation? Without departing from the realm of realism, the events and characters on stage are all choreographed by a character who, having died before the events of the play, is completely absent, yet whose writing continues to control the living from beyond the grave.
The Treasury is a verse drama and offers a humorous look at Muslim-Jewish relations during a tense period in the Ottoman Empire. The country is nearly bankrupt, but help is at hand. The play commences with Sultan Levent, his viziers, and the treasurer discussing a possible solution: a Greek princess, rich enough to solve all the empire's financial woes, has arrived to marry the sultan. However, the sultan is already married and very much in love with his wife, Inci, so he dismisses their plans. Salomon, a Jewish banker, presents a plan to earn money for the treasury. In the second part of the play, Levent is wakened by his wife, Inci: It has all been a dream and they are late for an exhibition about the fall of the Ottoman Empire due to bankruptcy. If only the Sultan really had listened to his Jewish advisor!
In this book, in the first chapter, I wrote the story of my grandmother and her family, beginning in Turkey, Eskisehir, the Benforma couple's family tree will eventually cover a much wider region including not only Ankara, Izmir and Istanbul but also Israel, Holland and the US. In the second chapter, I'll be providing a series of archival materials about the Jewish life in three cities: Eskisehir, Ankara and Izmir. These pages include documents that I gathered from the Internet and local press as well as the ones from my personal archive. The third chapter will focus on my own autobiography: my own experiences as a long-term volunteer in the Izmir Jewish community including the daily notes that I have taken while serving the community. I see it as my responsibility to pass on these facts to the next generations ..
