Beyond the Mother Tongue

Monolingualism-the idea that having just one language is the norm is only a recent invention, dating to late-eighteenth-century Europe. Yet it has become a dominant, if overlooked, structuring principle of modernity. According to this monolingual paradigm, individuals are imagined to be able to think and feel properly only in one language, while multiple languages are seen as a threat to the cohesion of individuals and communities, institutions and disciplines. As a result of this view, writing in anything but one's "mother tongue" has come to be seen as an aberration.

AAAlligator!

A humorous tale about acceptance, social justice and keeping an open mind. Though he’s scared at first, a boy who encounters an alligator in the woods discovers all the creature wants is companionship — and leftovers! — and the two become friends. But the mayor of the boy’s town won’t have it. He makes a proclamation, “NO ALLIGATORS! Blah, blah, blah.” Which the townspeople agree with, at first. Then they realize how friendly the alligator is (and how nice it is to have someone eat their leftovers!), and they want him to stay. Can they all come together and find a way to keep the alligator in their town? See you later, alligator? Not if these townspeople can help it!

Linty: A Pocketful of Adventure

Silliness abounds in this offbeat early graphic novel with loads of heart. In the pocket of a faded pair of hand-me-down jeans, a tiny ball of lint lives alone. Linty’s days are all much the same: Some cardio. Sightseeing (“So blue!”). Solo Marco Polo. Until one day, a boy starts wearing the jeans and everything changes. Is Linty’s world about to be turned upside down, again? An in-jean-ious idea. Kids will never think of their pant pockets the same way again!
