Weltliteratur aus Lateinamerika
Ausgehend von der Analyse der schriftstellerischen Laufbahnen von fünf zwischen 1970 und 1985 geborenen lateinamerikanischen Schriftsteller*innen sowie ihren internationalen Debüts, stellt das Buch einen Anforderungskatalog auf, den lateinamerikanische Autor*innen gegenwärtig zu erfüllen haben, wenn sie als Weltautor*innen gelten möchten. Dabei rückt es die Schriftsteller*innen, die bisher in den akademischen Debatten um das Konzept Weltliteratur nur eine untergeordnete Rollen spielten, in den Mittelpunkt und untersucht ihre intra- wie auch extraliterarischen Autorbilder und -figuren auf etwaige Weltliterarizität. Es gibt Auskunft darüber, welche Faktoren die Übersetzung, Zirkulation und Rezeption, d.h. die Selektion oder Exklusion als Weltautor*in beeinflussen. Besonders an dem Buch ist die Auseinandersetzung mit lateinamerikanischer Gegenwartsliteratur, wodurch betont wird, dass Weltliteratur (auch) im Hier und Jetzt entsteht. Life Is Not Useful
Indigenous leader and activist Ailton Krenak reminds us that we must awaken from the comatose senselessness we have been immersed in since the beginning of the modern colonial project, where order, progress, development, consumerism, and capitalism have taken over our entire existence, leaving us only very partially alive, and, in fact, almost dead. To awaken from the coma of modernity is, for Krenak, to awaken to the possibility of becoming attuned to “the cosmic sense of life.” He points out that the COVID-19 pandemic affects all so-called “human” lives and that the time is ripe for us all to reflect on and undo the exclusivity and distinction that have characterized the concept of humanity throughout Western modernity.
Beyond Mestizaje
Racism has historically been a taboo topic in Mexico. This is largely due to the nationalist project of mestizaje which contends that because all Mexicans are racially mixed, race is not a salient political issue. The Politics of Literary Prestige provides the first comprehensive study of prizes for Spanish American literature. Covering state-sponsored and publisher-run prizes including the Biblioteca Breve Prize – credited with launching the 'Boom' in Spanish American literature – the Premio Cervantes and the Nobel Prize for Literature, this book examines how prizes have underpinned different political agenda. As new political positions have emerged so have new awards and the role of the author in society has evolved. Prizes variously position the winners as public intellectual, spokesperson on the world stage or celebrity in the context of an increasingly globalized literature in Spanish. Drawing on a range of sources, Sarah E.L Bowskill analyses prizes from the perspective of different stakeholders including states, publishers, authors, judges and critics.
