Social Emotions and Their Influences

The common dimensional model of emotion has emphasized that emotional information is generally processed from two dimensions: valence (from negative to positive) and arousal (from low to high). Recently, several theories have proposed that emotions also vary along a sociality dimension, ranging from non-social emotions (i.e., basic biological drives) to social emotions (i.e., complex social interactions). Specifically, non-social emotions (e.g., fear) are derived from incentives or aversive emotions that have direct physiological relevance, whereas social emotions (e.g., guilt) are elicited within the context of social information processing or social cognition. Multiple empirical studies ha...

Min Yong-hwan

The diplomat and scholar-official Min Yông-hwan (1861-1905), described by one contemporary Western observer as "undoubtably the first Korean after the emperor," is best remembered in Korean historiography for his pioneering diplomacy at the courts of Tsar Nicholas II and Queen Victoria in the late 1890s. Furthermore, he is considered to be the foremost patriot of Korea's Taehan era (1897-1907). This pioneering study of Min Yông-hwan is long overdue and provides us with a new perspective on a period of Korean history that still casts its shadow over the region today. This new biography of Min contributes substantially to our understanding of this period by looking beyond the established vie...

The Politics of Coalition in Korea

This book examines how inter- and intra-party coalition-building affects governability in South Korea. Focusing on the Kim Dae-jung administration (1998-2003) as a case study in the failure of a government to turn electoral success into stable governability, or ability to implement reform policies, the book’s research draws on two bodies of literature which, though focusing on the same dependent variable (cabinet or government stability), have rarely been used in tandem: coalition research on parliamentary systems and studies of divided government in presidential systems. Youngmi Kim argues that a weak institutionalization of the ruling party and the party-system accounts for political ins...
