This book is about the human rights violations in Tibet, which include restrictions on freedom of religion, culture, language, belief, and association. In particular, Tibetans are subjected to arbitrary arrests and ill-treatment in detention, including torture by the Chinese authorities. Press freedom remains non-existent in China and the media in Tibet is tightly controlled by the Chinese leadership, making it difficult to accurately determine the extent of human rights violations. Today, China sees Tibetan religion and culture as the biggest threat to the Communist Party leadership. Cover photo: After 65 years of brutal oppression of the Tibetan people by China, Tibet is still an occupied territory and Tibetans live under constant surveillance by the military and police.
Since 2009, images of Tibetans setting themselves on fire in protest of the repressive policies of the Chinese government have drawn attention from around the world. In Aflame for Freedom in Tibet: The Origin and Development of the Self-Immolation Movement, Namloyak Dhungser examines the protest movement and its motivations through interviews with Tibetans, both inside Tibet and abroad, and in the context of developments in Tibetan history, providing unique insight into the multifaceted origins of this movement in both contemporary and historic Tibetan perspectives. The number of self-immolating protestors continues to climb: a final plea from Tibetans to the world to secure their freedom. This book is not only a path to a deeper understanding of the Tibetan situation—past and future—but a call to action to recognize basic Tibetan human rights.
High Hopes is the story of Tibetan education in India since the arrival of Tenzin Gyatso, the Fourteenth Dalai Lama in India in 1959. When His Holiness the Dalai Lama arrived in India, he came with his retinue and many thousands of followers who arrived soon after. Their arduous journey was to a country about which most of them were ignorant. They came as deeply committed Buddhists and with a positive belief in the future. Other than the monks and high officials, most of them had little or no formal education or experience. They arrived into a country which was still emerging and forming its own identity, and still reeling from the 'Partition' and all of the related changes that had taken place after the departure of the British 'Raj'. This relatively small group of Tibetans were strangers in the political landscape of the sub-continent, with its millions. Somehow Nehru and the Indians found a way to accommodate the Tibetans. This book traces that story and the way that the Tibetans in-exile have been able to forge their own unique Buddhist way of life and to incorporate that into their path for future.
