Israeli-Jordanian Dialogue, 1948-1953

Taking issue with Avi Shlaim's analysis, Yoav Gelber offers his own survey of Israeli-Jordanian relations during and after the war that established the state of Israel in 1948-49. He argues that the situation was much more complex and the chain of events less orchestrated than Shlaim's collusion theory suggests.

Palestine 1948, 2nd Edition

Since the 1970s, the Latin Based on new or newly interpreted Israeli, British and Arab documents, this book attempts to integrate present controversies concerning the development of the Jewish-Palestinian war from December 1947 to mid-May 1948 and the consecutive Israeli-Arab war. It follows the organization of both sides at the beginning of the war and the shaping of their respective war policies. Further, it describes the creation of the invading coalition and its disintegration in the wake of the Arab armies' military failure. The book stresses mainly the processes that led Palestinian society to its collapse and mass flight and the Israeli reactions and policies that turned this temporary escape into a long-lasting refugee problem. Emphasizing the different historical and cultural perspectives of the adversaries and the context of the war's development, it criticises the approach of the Israeli 'New Historians' who tend to isolate the refugee problem from the broader issues of the war and treat it separately. Includes a glossary of Arab/Israeli wartime operations.

During the last 20 years, Israel has reached unprecedented prosperity, yet it is haunted by existential fears for its future, identity, and survival. Israel's legitimacy is under assault from within and without by a coalition of left-wing radicals, Palestinians and their sympathizers, and Muslim fundamentalists. All these groups deny the existence of a Jewish nation and argue that Jews do not need a nation state. Hence, Israel should either disappear completely or become 'a state of all its citizens' devoid of any Jewish symbol or identity. The origins of this campaign are twofold. The Shoah and the War

The destruction of nearly six million Jews during the Second World War is not only the unique tragedy of the Jewish people, but also a part of the history of the War. In this book, 25 of the leading specialists in Europe, America and Israel describe various aspects of the interrelation between the conduct of the war and the destruction of the Jews. These studies include analyses of the German army and administration, the policy of the fascist parties, the German satellite states, questions relating to rescuing Jews, and the Jewish Resistance.

Comprehending the Holocaust

This volume is the result of the latest works of twenty-two scholars, among them some of the most prominent experts in Holocaust historical and literary research. This common subject, Comprehending the Holocaust, is still an unattained and perhaps unattainable objective for the present generation. Nevertheless, these outstanding scholars, from various countries, present the most up-to-date answers - though some of them seem controversial. The topic, the comprehension, is discussed in the context of both the Holocaust and its aftermath. All papers were prepared for a Congress that was held in June 1986 by the Strochlitz Institute at the University of Haifa.

Dapim

The present volume is a selection of studies published previously in Hebrew in "Dapim," by the Institute for Research of the Holocaust Period. They were selected, from a great number of excellent studies, because of their outstanding qualities. The ten contributions presented here come from the fields of history, psychology, sociology and literature. Some were written by well known professors, others, by young and promising scholars. A wide range of subjects is covered, varying from anti-Jewish legislation in Romania to Jewish Resistance in Cracow, from the psychology of murderous technocrats to consciousness of high-school students in Israel and, speculatively, the memory of the Holocaust for future generations.
