The Archaeology of the Logging Industry

The American lumber industry helped fuel westward expansion and industrial development during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, building logging camps and sawmills—and abandoning them once the trees ran out. In this book, John Franzen surveys archaeological studies of logging sites across the nation, explaining how material evidence found at these locations illustrates key aspects of the American experience during this era. Franzen delves into the technologies used in cutting and processing logs, the environmental impacts of harvesting timber, the daily life of workers and their families, and the social organization of logging communities. He highlights important trends, such as incr...

Travels on conferences

Once upon the time, in the 1960th a hen or an egg was delivered by the NASA (National Air and Space Agency) that dealt with all kinds of electronic communication to improve the astronauts' safety. It took another 25 years until the first international (European) Conference on Telepathology (electronic communication in pathology) took place in the philosophers' romantic city of Heidelberg in 1992. This book describes all conferences which occurred in a two years period, and the development of telepathology and digital pathology from 1992 until 2018. These fourteen conferences are a mirror of the technological progress in man's understanding and application of virtual worlds and digital medici...

The Lakota Ritual of the Sweat Lodge

The Lakota Ritual of the Sweat Lodge

For centuries, a persistent and important component of Lakota religious life has been the Inipi, the ritual of the sweat lodge. The sweat lodge has changed little in appearance since its first recorded description in the late seventeenth century. The ritual itself consists of songs, prayers, and other actions conducted in a tightly enclosed, dark, and extremely hot environment. Participants who “sweat” together experience moral strengthening, physical healing, and the renewal of social and cultural bonds. Today, the sweat lodge ritual continues to be a vital part of Lakota religion. It has also been open to use, often controversial, by non-Indians. The ritual has recently become popular among Lakotas recovering from alcohol and drug addiction. This study is the first in-depth look at the history and significance of the Lakota sweat lodge. Bringing together data culled from historical sources and fieldwork on Pine Ridge Reservation, Raymond A. Bucko provides a detailed discussion of continuity and changes in the “sweat” ritual over time. He offers convincing explanations for the longevity of the ceremony and its continuing popularity.
