The History of Linguistics in the Near East
This collection of papers deals with aspects of the history of Arabic and Hebrew linguistics. These papers appeared simultaneously in Historiographia Linguistica 8:2/3 (1981).
The Arabic Contributions to the English Language
The largest and most up-to-date collection of English words and multiword units borrowed from the Arabic, directly or indirectly, totalling 2338 items. All major dictionaries in English were surveyed, including new-word collections, and college dictionaries.Each dictionary entry gives the fi rst recorded date of the loan in English, the semantic field, variant forms, etymology, the English definitions, derivative forms, and sometimes grammatical comment. The major sources of each entry are noted, along with the approximate degree of assimilation in English. A substantial part of the book is devoted to nontechnical analytical essays, which treat the forty-six semantic areas so as to embrace all disciplines and throw light on the individual subject. Other essays treat the phonological and linguistic aspects of the data, so as to show how languages in contact interact and ultimately influence each other's culture. This is a wide-ranging, innovational book that advances the study of comprehensive borrowing within languages over the centuries.
The Men of Madina
This book is the translation of Volume 7 of the Kitab at-Tabaqat al-Kabir of Ibn Sa?d which deals with the Companions, Tabi?un and the subsequent generations of the people of knowledge in Basra, Baghdad, Khurasan, Syria and Egypt. This book is of particular interest because its pages demonstrate the attitude and action of the Companions and the Tabi?un when confronted by the most dangerous of trials ? fitna, or civil war. This is extremely important in the modern age, in which fitna is commonplace, for we can learn a great deal from how the early Muslims dealt with it.

Al-Dawoody examines the justifications and regulations for going to war in both international and domestic armed conflicts under Islamic law. He studies the various kinds of use of force by both state and non-state actors in order to determine the nature of the Islamic law of war.

Dans un hadith du Prophète (paix et salut sur lui), il est rapporté qu'un homme lui demanda de quoi il devait se préserver. Il lui répondit d'un geste de la main, en lui désignant sa langue. C'est dire l'importance de la préservation de la langue dans la spiritualité islamique. Il n'est donc pas anodin que ce soit le premier hadith que rapporte l'imam Ibn Abî al-Dunyâ dans son Livre du silence. Le lecteur trouvera, dans ce classique du patrimoine islamique, 760 récits du Prophète (paix et salut sur lui), d'autres prophètes, mais aussi de pieux prédécesseurs, autour des thématiques du silence et de l'éthique de la parole en islam. L'imam Ibn Abî al-Dunyâ (207-281 H.) vécut à Bagdad, fut notamment disciple de l'imam Ahmad, précepteur du calife abbasside al-Mutakfi, spécialiste du hadith, ascète, éducateur et auteur à l'œuvre abondante.

Studies in Legal Hadith
This book is dedicated to an analysis of seven groups of hadiths related to matters ranging from the rules concerning water used for ablution to those concerning the proof of facts in a qadi court. It has three main purposes. The first is to clarify the processes by which hadiths on a given topic were formed and developed by analyzing their isnāds and matns and by comparing them with expositions of positive law in legal manuals. Second, it seeks to explain why many hadiths exist in multiple variants and to detect the perception of traditionists about the revision of hadiths. The third purpose is to propose a methodology to estimate the extent to which traditionists accepted hadiths on a particular topic.
