‘Becoming – An Anthropological Approach to Understandings of the Person in Java’ is an ethnographic monograph that examines the ways in which the peoples of a peri-urban locality in East Java, Indonesia conceive of the person, by looking at how their everyday practices relate to understandings of ethnicity, kinship, Islam and gender. The volume is also a thought experiment that aims to make a theoretical contribution to the discipline of anthropology by proposing the concept of the ‘diaphoron’ person and re-deploying the method of ‘total ethnography’.

Religious Perspectives in Modern Muslim and Jewish Literatures
This book brings together fascinating discussions of the way in which Muslim and Jewish beliefs and practices are represented in modern literary texts of poetry, fiction and drama. The chapters collected here consider elements of the expression of Judaism and Islam in modern literature. Key topics such as religious ideas and teachings, aspects of mysticism, the tenets of religion, uses made of sacred texts, religion and popular culture and reflections of religious controversies are covered. While there is an embodied comparative element to the chapters, the essays are not confined by comparisons and cover a wide range of the literary expression of religious issues. We are playing relatives offers a comprehensive survey of literary writing in the Malay language. It starts with the playful evocations of language and reality in the Hikayat Hang Tuah, a work that circulated on the Malay Peninsula in the eighteenth century, and follows the Malay literary impulse up to the beginning of the twenty-first century, a time when the dominant notions of Malay literature seem to fade away in the cyberspace created on the island of Java, and the Hikayat Hang Tuah's play and dance on the sounds of Malay words seem to be infused with a new vitality. Religious Authority and the Prospects for Religious Pluralism in Indonesia
This book deals with the role and authority of such traditionalist Muslim scholars as A. Mustofa Bisri and Emha Ainun Nadjib in seeding religious pluralism in Indonesia. It shows that it is not necessary to base religious pluralism on "liberal" or "modernist" stances but rather on "traditionalist" attitudes. Religious pluralism can be smoothly connected to "traditionalism", so that this may preserve greater credibility in the population. Traditionalist scholars may play a considerable role in promoting religious pluralism in the society, in general, and among anti-pluralist groups, in particular.
