Seeking a Future for the Past: Space, Power, and Heritage in a Chinese City examines the complexities and changing sociopolitical dynamics of urban renewal in contemporary China. Drawing on ten years of ethnographic fieldwork in the northeastern Chinese city of Qingdao, the book tells the story of the slow, fragmented, and contentious transformation of Dabaodao—an area in the city’s former colonial center—from a place of common homes occupied by the urban poor into a showcase of architectural heritage and site for tourism and consumption. The ethnography provides a nuanced account of the diverse experiences and views of a range of groups involved in shaping, and being shaped, by the ur...

In 1937, the Nationalists under Chiang Kaishek were leading the Chinese war effort against Japan and were lauded in the West for their efforts to transform China into an independent and modern nation; yet this image was quickly tarnished. The Nationalists were soon denounced as militarily incompetent, corrupt, and antidemocratic and Chiang Kaishek, the same. In this book, van de Ven investigates the myths and truths of Nationalist resistance including issues such as: the role of the US in East Asia during the Second World War the achievements of Chiang Kaishek as Nationalist leader the respective contributions of the Nationalists and the Communists to the defeat of Japan the consequences of the Europe First strategy for Asia. War and Nationalism in China offers a major new interpretation of the Chinese Nationalists, placing their war of resistance against Japan in the context of their prolonged efforts to establish control over their own country and providing a critical reassessment of Allied Warfare in the region. This groundbreaking volume will interest students and researchers of Chinese History and Warfare.
In Shifts of Power: Modern Chinese Thought and Society, Luo Zhitian brings together nine essays to explore the causes and consequences of various shifts of power in modern Chinese society, including the shift from scholars to intellectuals, from the traditional state to the modern state, and from the people to society. Adopting a microhistorical approach, Luo situates these shifts at the intersection of social change and intellectual evolution in the midst of modern China’s culture wars with the West. Those culture wars produced new problems for China, but also provided some new intellectual resources as Chinese scholars and intellectuals grappled with the collisions and convergences of old and new in late Qing and early Republican China.

ACO with EBS is an effective approach in scheduling a small set of tasks and manages to yield better plans with high statistic and mean access time and more stable workload assignments compared with other existing approaches. In the ABC-GA model software project task scheduling framework offers a critical importance on static data. This method successfully optimizes the project scheduling using static data. Traditional ACO solves the problem of project scheduling, but it does not consider the employee allocation matrix.
Welcome to Zhangjiajie for the 3rd International Conference on Computer Network and Mobile Computing (ICCNMC 2005). We are currently witnessing a proliferation in mobile/wireless technologies and applications. However, these new technologies have ushered in unprecedented challenges for the research community across the range of networking, mobile computing, network security and wireless web applications, and optical network topics. ICCNMC 2005 was sponsored by the China Computer Federation, in cooperation with the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Computer Society. The objective of this conference was to address and capture highly innovative and stateof-the-art resear...
