During an intense period at the previous turn of the century, Signe Maria and Ernest Thiel created one of Sweden?s finest and largest collections of Nordic contemporary art. When the collection outgrew the family?s apartment on Strandvägen, they commissioned the architect Ferdinand Boberg, to design the white palace on south Djurgården that is now the Thiel Gallery. The idea was to create a combined exhibition space and home in the main building, which was completed in 1907. In a conversation with Boberg, Thiel said: ?I want a home decorated with paintings on all the walls, it should be pleasant, I want to live there.?00?A Home? looks at the Thiel Gallery?s origins as a residence and striv...

This book provides case studies and general views of the main processes involved in the ecosystem shifts occurring in the high mountains and analyses the implications for nature conservation. Case studies from the Pyrenees are preponderant, with a comprehensive set of mountain ranges surrounded by highly populated lowland areas also being considered. The introductory and closing chapters will summarise the main challenges that nature conservation may face in mountain areas under the environmental shifting conditions. Further chapters put forward approaches from environmental geography, functional ecology, biogeography, and paleoenvironmental reconstructions. Organisms from microbes to large carnivores, and ecosystems from lakes to forest will be considered. This interdisciplinary book will appeal to researchers in mountain ecosystems, students and nature professionals. This book is open access under a CC BY license.

In celebration of his birth centenary, the Indian Statistical Institute organized an International Conference on Human Genetics from 15 to 19 December, 1992. The prime motive in holding this Conference was to bring together a group of scientists - geneticists, anthropologists, clinicians and s...

The Scholar in His Study

The Scholar in His Study

In fifteenth- and sixteenth-century Italy, many leading citizens constructed and furnished distinctive studies for themselves. The study was an individually designed room for private and social use - as an office, library, a family archive or treasury, as the nucleus of an art collection, or as a space for contemplation. This book is an account of the Renaissance Italian study and its contents. Illustrated with depictions of studies and the precious and unusual objects they contained, the book examines the significance of the study to its owner and visitors, its structure and location, and the prized possessions that might fill such a special room.
