This book examines how film articulates countercultural flows in the context of the Egyptian Revolution. The book interrogates the gap between radical politics and radical aesthetics by analyzing counterculture as a form, drawing upon Egyptian films produced between 2010 and 2016. The work offers a definition of counterculture which liberates the term from its Western frame and establishes a theoretical concept of counterculture which is more globally redolent. The book opens a door for further research of the Arab Uprising, arguing for a new and topical model of rebellion and struggle, and sheds light on the interaction between cinema and the street as well as between cultural narratives and politics in the context of the 2011 Egyptian uprising. What is counterculture in the twenty-first century? What role does cinema play in this new notion of counterculture?
As the title indicates, three themes of perpetual interest in contemporary cultural studies – place, identity, and nationality – converge in this critical essay collection. While proffering varied and sometimes clashing arguments concerning the title themes, the essays and their authors all assert the importance of the creative text in defining, contesting, and understanding place, identity, and nationality in the modern and contemporary globalised world. The critical frameworks of these essays grow out of the groundbreaking literary and cultural studies theory of the past two decades. However, several of the essays map hitherto unchartered territory by engaging with recent works from em...

Were it simply a collection of fascinating, previously unpublished folktales, Speak, Bird, Speak Again: Palestinian Arab Folktales would merit praise and attention because of its cultural rather than political approach to Palestinian studies. But it is much more than this. By combining their respective expertise in English literature and anthropology, Ibrahim Muhawi and Sharif Kanaana bring to these tales an integral method of study that unites a sensitivity to language with a deep appreciation for culture. As native Palestinians, the authors are well-suited to their task. Over the course of several years they collected tales in the regions of the Galilee, Gaza, and the West Bank, determinin...
The aim of the food processing is to ensure microbiological and chemical safety of foods, adequate nutrient content and bioavailability and acceptability to the consumer with regard to sensory properties and ease of preparation. Processing may have either beneficial or harmful effects on these properties, so each of these factors must be taken into account in the design and preparation of foods. This book offers a unique dealing with the subject and provides not only an update of state-of-the art techniques in many critical areas of food processing and quality assessment, but also the development of value added products from food waste, safety and nanotechnology in the food and agriculture industry and looks into the future by defining current obstacles and future research goals. This book is not intended to serve as an encyclopedic review of the subject. However, the various chapters incorporate both theoretical and practical aspects and may serve as baseline information for future research through which significant development is possible.
