Environmental Stress Cracking of Plastics

Environmental Stress Cracking of Plastics

Simultaneous action of stress and strain on plastics in contact with specific fluids causes the onset of cracking and embrittlement of plastic known as environmental stress cracking. Since this is responsible for 15% of all failures of plastics components, environmental stress cracking has long been the subject of intensive research. This volume reviews factors that influence environmental stress cracking, and the state of knowledge regarding many families of plastics. Various types of damage, from disfiguring to catastrophic, are discussed in this volume, with the period of time over which the damage occurs. Plastics designers and specifiers will benefit from the wealth of information and data provided.

Heterophase Network Polymers

This volume explains the theory and experimental investigations in the preparation of heterophase polymer network materials through cure reaction-induced microphase separation (CRIMPS). It describes the synthesis of a new family of block- and graft-copolymers with controlled solubility in epoxies and characterizes CRIMPS processes using novel applications of known methods such as nuclear magnetic resonance, electron spin resonance and photochemistry. The text develops a new method for characterizing the molecular mass distribution (MMD) of linear and network polymers using thermomechanical analysis data, as well as new methods for determining internal stresses and flaw formation during thermoset curing. The CRIMPS theory will be helpful for researchers and engineers designing and improving toughened plastics and other smart heterophase network materials for different applications. The new method for MMD characterization of polymers in bulk will be very useful to quickly analyze a polymer's MMD and to design new polymers. This book will provide a useful reference for graduates, researchers and working professionals in polymer chemistry and physics and materials science.

Camping Chaos

Meet Maximus Todd! He's the kid who can't sit still. Max and his friends are on a camping trip at Camp Friendly Pines when he's stung by a wasp. Max gets a case of the Super Fidgets and devises a counting game to distract himself. If he loses, he will have to forfeit his campfire treats! It's not easy being a kid. And Max discovers that his games don't always work out the way he wants them to. But no matter what, he has the love and understanding of his friends.

The Philokalia

The Philokalia (literally "love of the beautiful or good") is, after the Bible, the most influential source of spiritual tradition within the Orthodox Church. First published in Greek in 1782 by St. Nicodemos of the Holy Mountain and St. Macarios of Corinth, the Philokalia includes works by thirty-six influential Orthodox authors from the fourth to fifteenth-centuries such as Maximus the Confessor, Peter of Damascus, Symeon the New Theologian, and Gregory Palamas. Surprisingly, this important collection of theological and spiritual writings has received little scholarly attention. With the growing interest in Orthodox theology, the need for a substantive resource for philokalic studies has become increasingly evident. The purpose of the present volume is to remedy that lack by providing an ecumenical collection of scholarly essays on the Philokalia that will introduce readers to its background, motifs, authors, and relevance for contemporary life and thought.

Geotechnical Engineering in the Digital and Technological Innovation Era

The book collects the keynote contributions and the papers presented at the “8th Italian Conference of Researchers in Geotechnical Engineering 2023, CNRIG’23”. The conference was held on July 5–7, 2023, at the University of Palermo (Italy), and it was organized under the auspices of the National Group of Geotechnical Engineering (GNIG). The event has been organized to promote interaction among geotechnical engineering and applied sciences, with special focus on technological and digital innovations. The book covers a wide range of classical and emerging topics in geotechnics, including innovation in laboratory testing and in situ monitoring, thermo-hydro-chemo-mechanical behavior of geo-materials, computational geomechanics, analyses of instability processes in seismic conditions, probabilistic approaches, resilience of critical infrastructures and advances in risk mitigation strategies, and eco-friendly solutions for soils and rocks stabilization. This book is intended for postgraduate students, researchers, and practitioners working on geotechnical engineering and related areas.
