Televising Restoration Spain
This edited volume examines the historical, political, cultural, and aesthetic implications of re-visiting Restoration Spain (1874-1931) in television costume dramas produced since 2000. Contributors analyze, from different theoretical approaches and disciplinary perspectives, the appeal that the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries hold for twenty-first-century Spanish audiences, as well as for international viewers who consume these programs through new media platforms. Themes and issues explored include: the production of televisual heritage, representations of period technologies, evolving constructions of gender, hybridization of television genres, and television as historian. Expanding the scope of inquiry in Spanish media studies, this collection seeks to bring Spain into wider discussions of media and historical representation and visual and material culture in Europe, the Americas, and beyond.
Docudrama on European Television
This book explores docudrama as a creative response to troubled times. With generic characteristics formed via traditions in theatre as well as film, and with claims to fact underscored by investigative journalism, television docudrama examines key events and personalities in unfolding national histories. Post-Fall of the Berlin Wall, docudrama has become a means for nations to work through traumatic experiences both within national borders and Europe-wide. In this regard, it is an important genre for television networks as they attempt to make sense of complex current events. These authors offer a template for further study and point towards ways in which European television cultures, beyond those discussed here, might be considered in the future.
La política en las series de televisión
¿Es la imagen que de la política ofrecen las series de televisión cínica o utópica? Este libro nace con la pretensión de dar cuenta de las series pertenecientes al drama político y, gracias al análisis de los autores que conforman esta obra, describir la representación de lo político en el imaginario televisivo de ficción contemporáneo. Para hacerlo, se ha dado cierta e inevitable primacía a la producción estadounidense (House of Cards, The Good Wife, The Newsroom, Louie, The Kennedys), seguida de la ficción anglosajona y europea (Borgen, The Hour, The Thick of It, The Red Riding Trilogy, Crematorio). Uno de los ejes que trata este monográfico es si la imagen política ofrecida en dichas representaciones audiovisuales es utópica o más bien distópica y cínica. La función de cuarto poder del periodismo en la era de la convergencia mediática y la llamada nueva política es también un tema importante en este volumen.

La ficción audiovisual en España
La ficción, en el audiovisual, es un género de largo recorrido. Aunque cambien los soportes y la manera de narrar, la necesidad de contarnos historias entre los humanos permanece inalterable. A pesar de todas las transformaciones que ha introducido la digitalización en las industrias culturales, la ficción continúa manteniendo una posición privilegiada en la cadena de valor de la producción audiovisual. Y lo seguirá manteniendo en el futuro. El presente libro aborda temas como: el valor de la ficción para las cadenas televisivas, la producción de ficción televisiva y cinematográfica, los nuevos retos narrativos de la ficción audiovisual, el recorrido de la ficción por la televisión española, o la producción de ficción para Internet y dispositivos móviles, que fueron analizados el pasado verano en la Universidad de Valencia en el marco de las IV Jornadas de Contenidos para la Televisión Digital CONTD. Screening Twentieth Century Europe
This book offers a comparative study of historical television genres in Europe, with a special focus on Germany and Great Britain and their way of narrating twentieth century European history. The book analyses our common European past and memory through central historical television narratives. Each chapter looks at how historical TV genres, fictional and documentary, have dealt with the most salient and defining periods, events and changes in the twentieth century— an age of extremes. Bondebjerg offers unique theoretical and analytical insight into the role of television in mediating and shaping the past. The book explores television’s creation of transnational cultural encounters across Europe in relation to our common and national past. The book addresses how television has influenced our understanding of history, collective memory and public debate over the twentieth century. It is fundamentally a book about the importance of the past in present day Europe and the centrality of media for transnational understanding.
(Re)collecting the Past
This collection explores the role of memoria histórica in its broadest sense, bringing together studies of narrative, theatre, visual expressions, film, television, and radio that provide a comprehensive overview of contemporary cultural production in Spain in this regard. Employing a wide range of critical approaches to works that examine, comment on, and recreate events and epochs from the civil war to the present, the essays gathered here bring together research and intercultural memory to investigate half a century of cultural production, ranging from “high culture” to more popular productions, such as television series and graphic novels. A testament to the conflation of multiple silencings – be they of the defeated, victims of trauma or women – this project is about hearing the voices of the unheard and recovering their muted past.
