Growing Up

What happens to the boy from the wrong side of the tracks after he grows up and heads off to war? How much does the effort of one kind adult mean in the lives of young people? How do friends from rival towns cope when they are the stars of their teams and their dads are out of control? From the group of 11-12 year old baseball players who are made up of a collection of kids who are cut from the other teams in their home town (complete with a right fielder in cowboy boots) to a sophomore basketball player who receives his baptism by fire against an All State opponent, Growing Up is full of entertaining stories that will bring back memories, cause a smile and make you think.

The Heart of Librarianship

“While full of tales of innovation, ideas that challenge our practice, and a regular dose of critical thinking, these pages are likewise full of humanism and heart.” Brian Kenney, Director at White Plains Public Library (NY); from the Foreword Adaptation to change that’s based on thoughtful planning and grounded in the mission of libraries: it’s a model that respected LIS thinker and educator Michael Stephens terms “hyperlinked librarianship.” And the result, for librarians in leadership positions as well as those working on the front lines, is flexible librarianship that’s able to stay closely aligned with the needs and wants of library users. In this collection of essays from...

Cambridge Police Department

Formally organized in 1859 with the appointment of John C. Willey as the first chief of police, the Cambridge Police Department was then manned by only 16 officers. The department has grown dramatically from its humble beginnings and today employs 277 sworn officers and a civilian staff of 37. Cambridge Police Department, the first comprehensive photographic history of the department, contains over 100 years of historical photographs, including images of specialized traffic and K-9 units, auxiliary police officers, uniforms, and equipment. Many of the vintage photographs in the collection have come from the department archives or were donated by family members of Cambridge officers.
