In this book, masterful Uruguayan guitarist and teacher Abel Carlevaro (1918-2001) offers insights to the performance of the 12 Studies (1929) by Heitor Villa-Lobos. Without presenting the complete works being analyzed, Carlevaro guides the student through the most challenging parts of each of these twelve landmark pieces. Using short examples and facsimiles of a few bars of the original manuscripts given to him by Villa-Lobos himself, Carlevaro reveals profound and illuminating insights. For the advanced student, its almost like being in a real master class with the maestro himself. This book is written in standard notation only. "Villa-Lobos gave birth to the modern guitar, forging a new path for it; the newly expanded musical and technical possibilities have greatly benefited the repertoire for the instrument." -Abel Carlevaro

His Last Works

The milonga began as a simple song accompaniment and is one of the oldest song and dance forms to originate in Argentina and Uruguay. Uruguayan composer, concert guitarist and teacher, Abel Carlevaro (1918-2001) preferred to take his time while composing and spent more than a year writing the two Milonga Suites in this collection. They comprise the last major works that Carlevaro wrote. By contrast, Aires de Malambo and the Milonga para Ling were both written in a single day as exercises for specific students, Nestor Ausqui and Dr. Ling Kan respectively. Written some thirty years apart, it is unlikely that Carlevaro ever expected to see their publication. The extraordinary music in this collection reflects both Carlevaros dedication to his students and the music of his homeland. The music is written in standard notation only and is recommended for the intermediate to advanced classic guitarist.
