Having a global perspective on such a contentious subject such as the one this book attempts to deal with can be a most daunting task. The papers selected for this publication are as diverse as the backgrounds of the authors and ideas that flow from the papers. Getting a global perspective is an important process because whether we affirm it or not, slavery and slave trade involve both oppressors who create the atmosphere for this pernicious trade to flourish as an economic system, the middlemen facilitators who profited at the expense of the victims of this ignoble trade, as well as the victims themselves. Every chapter should therefore be viewed from the perspective of its socio¿economic milieu as well as the idiosyncrasies of the author in order to understand the true synthesis of what each chapter endeavours to enlighten us about. This way everyone will find in this book his or her own story.

The Land and People of Rivers State
This is a comprehensive reference work, and a unique and original compendium of knowledge and analysis on Nigeria's Rivers State from the distant past to recent times. The Izon of the Niger Delta
The Izon of the Niger Delta is a global history of the Izon, Ijo, or Ijaw people from their homelands in the Niger Delta, through Nigeria, the West and Central African coastlands, and in the Africa diaspora into Europe, the America's and the Caribbean. It is a preliminary study which raises questions and opens ground for further research. The book provides chapters that take an overview of issues on the environment of the Niger Delta, an analysis of the Ijo population, the language, culture, resources, history and linkage to the rest of Nigeria and the world. In effect these chapters provide a synopsis of the Ijo in the past and their situation in the present.

The Transatlantic Slave Trade
Unesco celebrated 2004 as the international year to commemorate the struggle against slavery and its abolition. The Ghanaian Government's National Slave Route Project Committee held an international conference on transatlantic slave as part of that initiative. These papers are largely the proceedings of that conference, with the inclusion of a few papers from the National Conference on the Slave Trade in 2003. Supported by the Netherlands Embassy, Unesco, and an individual benefactor, the conference brought together over 400 people: Government Ministers, Unesco and diplomatic representatives, and scholars from Africa, the Caribbean, Australia, Europe and the USA. Twenty-nine papers and statements are included. The book is divided into opening statements, followed by papers on three main themes: landmarks, legacies and expectations.
Archaeology and Culture History in the Central Niger Delta
This book is a new contribution to existing archaeological research relevant to the cultural and anthropological history of Central Ijöland, situated in the Central Niger Delta. It draws primarily on oral traditions, local and internal histories in the reconstruction of the past. By tracing patterns of migration and dispersals within and from the region and examining material cultural items, the author attempts to reconstruct phases, settlements and ways of life. The work considers both the saltwater mangrove swamps sub-zone in the eastern region, and the freshwater swamp and forest sub-zone of the central Delta region. It sets out a reliable chronology of this sub-region. Finally, it highlights the cultural relationships and differences between the Ijö and other communities of the Eastern Delta.
